Gender Stereotypes Influenced by Toy Stores

About a year ago I left my job working at ToysRUs and went back to visit a few days ago. Once I entered the store the lay out had stayed the same as always, boy toys on the left and girls in the middle and “uni-sex” toys on the right. After walking through the aisles of the store I never really considered how toys could influence gender roles that could lead up to adulthood.
In the section of what is considered “boy toys”, it definitely influences how boys should strive to be manly, strong and heroic. While displaying the types of jobs or careers only a man should have. As shown in the 1959 Barbie commercial it displays women as pristine, fragile beautiful women whose only concern is fashion. Throughout the aisles it started with the usual make-up selection with glitter heels and dresses, then the damsel in distress Disney princess dolls, after there is a massive display with play kitchens with rubber food, pots and pans. Along with plastic cleaning products with vacuums, mops and brooms in the “domesticated section”. About one row down there was one aisles that was devoted to baby dolls and there accessories. In that particular row there where different dolls who talk, move on its own, pee and poop like a real baby with many tones of skin color. After, walking through these isles is was unbelievable to see how life like all the items was. Especially, when it came to the accessories, there was an actual baby brand Graco who made toy car seats, strollers, pack n play, highchairs and baby swings. Practically all the items a grown adult would need for a real child. ToysRUs, also has an undefined Uni-sex toy section where it consist of Board games, puzzles, books, outside play items such as jump ropes, Frisbees and different balls, along with advertisements for swing sets and
