Parenting Styles Parent has changed with the years. Spanking a child was okay in the past, but is frowned upon. Some parents believe in talking through situations. “In any society, parenting beliefs are a reflection of that society 's cultural values and traditions” (Hulei, Zevenbergen, & Jacobs, 2006). Traditions in one culture may not be accepted in another culture. Traditions change with the times; what is accepted today may not be accepted later in the future. Parent is based on three main styles, but past research has included a fourth. This essay will describe four parenting styles and compare them to the parenting styles on the Chinese and European parents. The Four Parenting Styles “Categorizing parents according to whether they are high or low on parental demanding and responsiveness creates a typology of four parenting styles: indulgent, authoritarian, authoritative, and uninvolved” (Darling, 1999). The first style is indulgent. According to Darling (1999) “indulgent parents are more responsive than demanding.” This style of parenting is also called permissive parenting which means parents “rarely discipline their children because they have relatively low expectations of maturity and self-control” (Parenting Styles: The Four Styles of Parenting, 2014). The next style is referred to as authoritarian parenting. “Authoritarian parents are highly demandind and directive, but not responsive like permissive parents” (Darling, 1999). This style expects children to follow the rules which are established by the parents (Parenting Styles: The Four Styles of Parenting, 2014). Authoritative parenting is not to be confused with authoritarian parenting because it parents are both demanding and responsive.
