There was growing tension between Turks and Armenians that ultimately lead to the genocide of 1.5 million Armenian Christians. In 1894, one of Turkish Sultan told a reporter that there will be a massacre against the Armenians known as “box on the ear.” In 1895 there were Ottoman forces that killed 2,500 Armenian women who were burned to death in Urfa Cathedral. Through 1894-1896 there were 80,000 Armenians killed from the massacre. Surmounting evidence shows that the events that took place during the Armenian Genocide directly reflect the five stages of the Pyramid of Hate. However, the Armenians believed in a different system or belief than the Turks. The Armenians were Christian and the Turks were Muslim. While the Turks and Armenians were under the Ottoman rulers, Armenians were looked at as “infidels”. They were also given unequal treatment like how they had to pay higher taxes than the Muslims. Also, they had very few political and legal rights. Since the two groups had different beliefs the Turks had despised the Armenians. One of the Turks solutions were to kill the Armenians because they couldn’t accept being near a different religious group. In 1914, WWI engaged. The Turks took on the side of Germany and Austro-Hungarian Empire. The outbreak of the war had gave the Turks the idea of killing the Armenians. “During the war Ottoman religious authorities had declared a holy war all Christians besides their allies” (Armenian Genocide). The military leaders had thought the Armenians as traitors. Also, there were arguments about how the Armenians would fight on the Allies side for independence. Since the Armenians wanted independence, they had fought alongside Russia to beat the Turks. The Turks were highly suspicious of the Armenians, so they pushed for the “removal” of the Armenians from the war zones and had disarmed the entire Armenian population. There were 300 Armenian intellectuals rounded up. The 300 intellectuals were forced to leave their homes to be tortured, hanged, or shot. After that, there were Armenians that were sent out of their homes and sent to the death march. The death march took place in the Mesopotamian desert without food or water. Frequently, the prisoners were stripped naked and forced to walk in the hot sun until they dropped dead. If someone were to stop during the death march they would be killed. At the same time, the Young Turks created a “Special Organization,” which in turn organized “killing squads” or “butcher battalions” to carry out, as one officer put it, “the liquidation of the Christian elements” (Armenian Genocide). The killing squads would consist of murderers and ex-convicts. Their objective was to kill Armenians men and women. The killing squads would drown Armenians in rivers or throw them off cliffs. Also, they would be crucified or burned alive. It was known that the whole Turkish country side was full of Armenian corpses. The killings of the Armenians by the killing squads is known the “Turkification”
