The Armenian Genocide, also known as the Armenian Holocaust, the Great Calamity, and the Armenian Massacre, was the organized killing of nearly 1.5 million Armenians. It occurred in the Ottoman Empire - present-day Turkey - where 2 million Armenians lived. The Armenian Genocide is the second-most studied massacre, after the Nazi Holocaust. Twenty-two countries have officially recognized it as genocide, but the Republic of Turkey rejects the characterization of the events as genocide. Many Armenians who are descendants of survivors are fighting for its recognition.
Under the Millet system, the Ottoman Empire did not give nearly as many rights to Armenians as to Muslims. They couldn't serve in the military, they couldn't testify against Muslims in court, and they could not bear arms. They also had to pay a much higher tax. In 1914, it was estimated that about 2,000,000 Armenians lived in the Empire.
In 1876, the Empire?s prince Abdul Hamid took over the throne. He ruled from 1876 to 1909. During his reign, he suspended the Constitution and assumed dictorial powers. Several, small-scale Armenian massacres also occurred. In 1908, the Young Turks, a coalition of various groups favoring reforming the administration of the Ottoman Empire, revolted and took over the government. The gap between Muslims and non-Muslims rose.
In November of 1914, the Ottoman Empire joined World War I. In one of its first major battles, it fought Russia and lost miserably. The Young Turks began blaming Armenians for their lack of dedication. They started a campaign of anti-Armenian propaganda, with sayings such as ?The Armenians are in league with the enemy?. Finally, in 1915, the Temporary Law of Expropriation and Confiscation was...

The Armenian genocide has been remembered and its victims honored in many ways. There are medals, the earliest of which was created in 1915, and many paintings and photographs are now on display. Musicians such as the band System of a Down promote awareness of the genocide, since they are descendents of survivors.
The Armenian Genocide was a tragic event in history, needless to say. The saddest part, though, is that it is barely even recognized. There are countries that refuse to accept its place in history, and there are even websites that insult Armenians and call them liars. It is a shame that Armenians do not get the recognition that other genocides received, such as the Jewish Holocaust.
The book “Forgotten Fire” was written by Adam Bagdasarian as a piece of historical fiction. Even though this book isn’t non-fiction it’s still based on true facts about the Armenian Genocide. Vahan is a 12 year old boy living in Bitlis, Turkey. Vahan lives the life of privilege as the youngest son of a wealthy family. Being the youngest son he has 3 brothers by the name or Diran, Tavel, and Sisak. Also he has 2 sisters by the name of Oskina and Armenouhi. This story was based on a true story about the Armenian Genocide in Vahan Kenderian point of view. Throughout the story Vahan is constantly losing friends and family while running for his life from the gendarmes. The Armenian Genocide was lead by Turkey which started in 1923 and lasted for 8 years. The Turkish government killed one and a half million Armenians during the 8 year process. This is an essay on the story of Vahan Kenderian before, during, and after the Armenian Genocide and how it changed his life.
They invaded the city over and over again taking the young children and turning them into slaves and humiliating them in front of the entire city. They wanted to get rid of Christianity completely in a short amount of time. The turks felt victorious every time that they captured a new group. This shows how this time period was at a constant war. There was never peace among cities.
Millions on millions were killed and even more were harmed, starved, and worked to near death. Eventually an international effort was created, a war against Germany, The Nazis, and the Axis powers. They were stopped, but only after millions had already been killed. On the other hand, an estimated two million Armenians were killed in the Ottoman empire. At least a million others were deported. After the Central Powers were defeated, the genocide ended because the perpetrators no longer had power. In most cases, these situations are ended by other countries uniting together to end these
The Young Turks, a group of young military officers who wanted to keep their country’s decline from continuing, wanted to improve general conditions for certain peoples in the Ottoman empire. Not only was anyone who was not Muslim treated as second class citizens, they were also required by law to pay more for their taxes than a muslim civilian. Realizing this, in the 1890s and early 1900s, an organization called The Young Turks arose, pressing for political reform calling for the right to vote, a constitutional government and and an end to discriminatory practices such as the aforementioned raised taxes. Eventually, The Young Turks staged a coup successfully in an attempt to change the rule to a constitutional monarchy . This, however, had some unforeseen consequences.

The word “genocide” is a general term. It is vague and could be used to group together and refer to a number of very unique events in history. Defined as the systematic murder of a specific group of people, genocides have occurred since ancient times. America’s most famous genocide, and the longest genocide in history, was the Native American Genocide. Considered to have begun the day the Mayflower hit the shore of Massachusetts, and ended in 1924 when the Indian Citizenship Act was past, the Native American Genocide lasted for over four centuries. In the 15th century, over 10 million Native Americans lived on the land that is part of the modern day United States. By 1900, that number was a mere 300,000. Most Americans, however, hardly know

A genocide can occur in other ways where a person or a body of people act wrongful resulting in mass killing. An event that I chose to write through an image is called Holodomor. Holodomor started in 1932 and lasted until 1933 and about six million to seven million people died. During the year, the person who was in control of the country was Stalin because Ukraine was still under Soviet Union’s control. The people that died there was caused from starvation and left to rot since they were no longer needed as shown above. For me I remember the feelings this brought on when I reclaim seeing this again. The reasons that I chose this picture to portray this important moment were power, pity, and grief.

At one time, the reforms made by the Young Turks worked well, but only for a short time. Overthrowing the tyranny of Hamid should have been enough to help establish a new government, but the triumvirate also became quite oppressive during their reign. Turkism established a new form of nationalism that left out various nationalities, races, and cultures, and this led to the decline of the empire. Following World War I, the empire was faced with so many conflicts, they were unable to remain strong. Even though the reformers set out to strengthen the empire, it is quite possible they are the reason for the fall of the Ottoman Empire.

The revolution occurred when discontented members of the Ottomans Army, the Committee of Union and Progress, and another group called the League of Private Initiative and Decentralization all agreed to work together. The revolt took place in 1908. Ahmed Niyazi a member of the Third Army Corps led a small revolt against provincial authorities; other revolutionaries holding revolts that were inspired by Ahmed's followed this. Since the Sultan could not rely on his military to support him he recalled parliament and in 1913 the triumvirate of Talat Pasa, Ahmed Cemel Pasa, and Enver Pasa gained power. Under the triumvirate the Young Turks major reforms took place. Their reforms led to a more centralized government; they promoted industrialization, and improved education.
