Spending money and consuming goods is favorable for the economy when it is done moderately and is focused on ones needs; however, consumers tend to overspend and buy unnecessary goods. We live in an era of consumerism that is all about desire-based consumption and has nothing to do with things we actually need. I believe that consumerism improves the economy, but consuming less helps more. As a matter of fact, our economy would crash without consumerism. The financial system we have today would collapse without the circulation of money and spending. Generally, the more goods produced and consumed by society the higher the growth rate of the economy; however, buying more than what one needs and ultimately wasting that product has become a major issue in today’s society and damages the environment (Millburn & Nicodemus 1). Understandably, it can help recover the economy from devastations (Millburn & Nicodemus 1). For example, The Great Depression was a very devastating fall for our economy. Although people barely had money to keep food in their stomachs, they continued to buy enough bread, vegetables, beans, etc. to have a little money circulating in the economy. Also, repairing, remanufacturing and refurbishing items are good ways to have a product and find many new ways to approach and use the product. Reusing the product prevents solid waste from entering landfills, improves our communities, and increases the material, educational, and occupational wellbeing of citizens and consumers by taking useful products discarded by those who no longer want them and providing them to those who do. Reuse has been used as a critical way of getting materials to the many disadvantaged populations that exist. It also provides a great way to give food, clothing, building materials, business equipment, medical supplies and other items they desperately
