There are many events that have happened in our history that have helped shape our country into what it is today. One of those events that helped change our country was the Decleration of Independance. The Declaration of Independence was written on July 4th, 1776. And this document was written so we were separate from England and so we weren’t under their power anymore. It meant that we were going to become a self-governing country. This was the very first big step we took to become our own country. And if we hadn’t have separated from England we wouldn’t be the country we are today. This helped build our nation and bring us closer together so we were united as one. This is when we realized we could be something bigger than what we were. Then next event that helped shape our country was the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. During this time Thomas Jefferson was our President and he was buying land from france to expand our country. During this purchase the U.S acquired about 827,000 square miles of land. And Thomas Jefferson bought this land for 15 million dollars. This land held the territory of some of today’s Colorado, Montana, Oklahoma, North and South Dakota and some more of the mid-western part of our country.This was an important event because this is what made our country. The Civil War took place from 1861-1865. And this war was caused over the dispute of slaves. The U.S was continuing to add states and the south wanted the states to become slave states, but the North wanted the states to be free states. This is when we realized we had many problems with our country and we needed to fix them. And the end of the war came with a great outcome. The ending of this war ended slavery for the whole U.S. Meaning that all African Americans in the U.S. were free. And they no longer had to be under slavery. This war was the one to end the 245 years of slavery we had in the U.S. And that changed our country
