Parvana was as a normal girl that had a normal life but that did not last long when the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. The Taliban banned all women from going to school, having a job, and even going outside on their own. In the book The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis, Parvana's has to take on the part of supporting her family after her father was arrested by the Taliban. Parvana disguises herself as a boy to support her family and she use the story of Malali to get through difficult situations.
Parvana has to take on her father’s challenging job and feed her family to be the Breadwinner of the family. Parvana disguised herself as boy so she can move in and out of the market without getting in trouble. This was very dangerous because if she was caught she could be beaten or even worse. When her father was arrested he told Parvana, “Take care of the others my Malali” (page 35). Parvana might not have had the courage and bravery to be the breadwinner of her family if her father didn’t support her with the brave story of Malali. When Parvana goes back to the prison she thinks back to Malali. “Malali wouldn’t be afraid, Parvana knew. Malali would form an army and lead it in a storming of the prison. Malali would lick her lips at such a challenge. Her knees wouldn’t be shaking as Paravans were.” (page 42) This gave Parvana courage to fight against the guards and try to free her father. The story of Malali helped Parvana encounter many of her challenges by leading her on how to be a brave person.
Parvana takes on many challenges throughout the book and grows more mature. At the end Parvana proved herself as the breadwinner of the family. She is the Malali that her father always talked about by showing strength and courage throughout her journey. Parvana would not be the breadwinner of her family it wasn’t for the help of Malali to keep her
