On September 11, 2001 millions of Americans were getting ready for another ordinary day of work, but little did they know the world as they knew it would change. Four airplanes were hijacked by terrorists and crashed into the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. The fourth plane was crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers retaliated against the hijackers. The terrorist attacks on America that day were performed by an Islamic terrorist group name al-Queda, led by Osama bin Laden. In total nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks including the civilians and hijackers aboard the planes. On September 20, 2001 George W. Bush addressed the nation pledging to protect America from terrorism and declared the War on Terrorism. So, how did the attacks on America on September change America forever? American Airlines Flight 11 departed from Boston’s Logan airport at 7:59 a.m. as well as United Airlines Flight 175 at 8:14 a.m. both en route to Los Angeles. At 8:20 American Airlines Flight 77 took off from Dulles International Airport in Virginia and shortly after at 8:42 United Airlines Flight 93 left Newark International Airport en route for San Francisco. The hijackers choose these flights across the country because they would be flying with large amount of fuel so when they would crash, they would cause the most amount of damage possible. At 8:46 American Airlines Flight 11 crashed in the North Tower of the World Trade Center, and at 9:03 United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. When the second plane hit, America knew they were under attack. The FAA grounded all planes and contacted NORAD and scrambled Jets after news of the hijackings. Unfortunately, th... ... middle of paper ... ...d an official day of mourning, the only other country besides America to do so. Although the attacks on the Twin Towers on September 11th were tragic and will never be forgotten, they did make America a safer place. The polices that were enacted after the attacks improved the security of America by initiating better security at airports and better surveillance to prevent any future attacks. However many Americans do not approve of the policies saying they are an invasion of privacy and that it makes air travel difficult. These may seem strict rules but if we are to keep America safe we require them. The attacks may have been a serious blow to America, but in the end America came out a stronger, better equipped country. With the completion of One World Trade Center come close, it just goes to show how much stronger the attacks on September 11, 2001 made America.
