Basic Steps of the Criminal Justice System: Ted Bundy

Background Information:

Theodore "Ted" Bundy’s mother, Eleanor Cowell was twenty-two years old and unmarried when she had her son Theodore. Bundy was raised as the adopted son of his grandparents and was told that his mother was his sister. Eleanor moved with Ted to Tacoma, Washington, a few years later. Bundy showed an unusual interest in the macabre at an early age. Around the age of 3, he became fascinated by knives. Bundy was a shy, but bright child who did well in school, but did not get along with his peers. As a teenager, Bundy began to steal from other people and businesses.

Crime Occurs:

Bundy was a student at the University of Washington, and fell in love with a girl from California. She had everything that he wanted: money, class, and influence. He was devastated by their breakup. The testimony of one of the survivors proved Bundy guilty, as did the dental (bite marks) evidence that linked him conclusively to the attacks. Bundy was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of burglary. For the two crimes of first-degree murder the trial judge imposed sentences of death. The jury returned a verdict of guilty and on the 30th of July 1979, the judge sentenced Bundy to death twice for the murders, to the electric chair. Bundy continued to maintain his innocence. Bundy fought for his life, spending years appealing his death sentence. An infamous national figure since his Florida trials, he remained a source of fascination for many.
