Technology In Law Enforcement Essay

For decades, Law Enforcement agencies has relied on the many creations, and implementations of new technology to assist in producing effectiveness. The 1900’s was a time that intensified the capability of solving crime. But as technology continues to evolve, so will the possibility of deterring crime, and successfully apprehending suspects nationwide.

Reports reveal that advancement/improvement of technology is slow and disproportionate. Linking many of which are designed and generated through commercial marketing places. However, the issue was primarily time consumption, expense, and liability of the products use. For law enforcement agencies to be equipped to deter crime the National Institution of Justice (NIJ), was the go to source. NIJ

A few sources of new or enhancing technology, beneficial to law enforcement in my opinion are:

1. Minicomputers

2. Equipment using less lethal force (ex: Tasers, or stun guns),

3. Technology ceasing fleeing vehicles (ex: electromagnetic vehicle stopping technology & fleeing vehicle tagging).

Although there is a frequent need for special equipment to effectively ensure public-safety, these four resources are beneficial enough in many communities when successfully apprehending suspects, and deterring ongoing crime. For many years the NIJ have been the developers, and decision makers behind law enforcement equipment, when nothing else falls in place. In addition, the NIJ supports the idea of two non-lethal alternatives for law enforcement, established back in the 1970’s. However, the most beneficial non-lethal alternative was the Taser or Stun gun (p 405). These resources served the purpose of alternative forces, to incapacitate an individual behaving negligent and recklessly.
