Teacher Violated Code of Ethics The code of ethics for teachers is a document that states how a teacher should portray themselves in a professional setting. The ethical philosophies are based on the school or state itself. The code of ethics also states the standards in which the teacher should interpret themselves or in which the teacher should conduct oneself properly. On Tuesday, March 31st, 2015 Brian Stroh a former Bethel elementary school teacher was escorted in to superior court. According to Oliveria (2016), “Stroh, 31, of New Fairfield, was a first-grade teacher at Berry Elementary School when State Police learned that he sexually assaulted three boys — ages 6, 9, and 11 — during a sleepover in his house.” Brian Stroh was one of …show more content…
A lot of the parents were unaware of the code of ethics. According to Oliveria (2016), one parent “Dennis O’Brien, who has three kids in the Bethel school system, said he was not familiar with the policy. Although he doesn’t blame the district for what happened, he wishes there was better communication about teacher ethics.” I believe O’Brien is right. He should not blame the district for what happen and there should be better communication about teacher ethics. I do not feel like teacher ethics is communicated enough between schools and parents. According to Code of Ethics for Educators (1994-2016), “The professional educator accepts personal responsibility for teaching students character qualities that will help them evaluate the consequences of and accept the responsibility for their actions and choices. We strongly affirm parents as the primary moral educators of their children.” The code of ethics should be communicated more with the parents in this day in age. Parents are sometimes unaware of the regulations teachers have to follow. If teachers expressed this to the parents, this incident could have been avoided. The parents of Bethel elementary were allowing their children to go home with the now convicted sex offender, Mr. Brian
A teacher’s most important duty is to protect the students they are in charge of. This duty includes both reasonably protecting students from harm and, when a student is harmed, reporting it to the proper authorities (Gooden, Eckes, Mead, McNeal, & Torres, 2013, pp. 103-109). There have been many court cases that reiterate this duty of school staff. One such case is Frugis v. Bracigliano (2003) where many staff at a school failed in their duty to protect students and allowed abuse to continue for years.
The court ruled that school board was in fact vicariously liable for teacher’s misconduct although they did nothing to cause the assault. The court stated that it was the school board decision to give such a risky individual, as a trusted professional employee with authority over students. Therefore, the school board must be held accountable when those risks emerge and cause loss or damages to innocent
Standards 1, 4 and 5 are the most important standard of the code of ethics that all teachers must follow. Standard 1 having a professional conduct should demonstrated by all educators. Standard 4 teacher/student relationship should be conducted inside and outside the classroom. Standard 5 all educators should abide by the code of ethics of refrain from all use of drugs, tobacco and alcohol during school and school related activities. A disciplinary action can take place if any of the code of ethics is violated from a warning, suspension, revocation, or denial of
The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct was developed to uphold the application of core values, ideals, and principles to assist teachers’ decision-making about ethical issues. The Core Values of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct is based on the foundation of the field's commitment to young children. It is noteworthy that all seven of the Code's Core Values directly address our commitment to children:
The Code of Ethic for the Education Profession does not just involve the schools staff with its student but with everyone that is involved with the school. A quote from the first code “educator values the worth and dignity of every person” (1), to be an educator one has to keep their colleges, boss, parents, student and community in mind. To be in the education profession one is signing up to be a trustworthy, knowledgeable, devoted, and understanding individual. They must guarantee equal opportunities for everyone. Their primary concern is to their students learning and potential. One has to “sustain the highest degree of ethical conduct” (1).
From the reading “Ethical and Legal Issues in U.S. Education”, there were three points that that surprised me. One point was that it is so surprising to me that there are so many steps that a teacher, on tenure, must go through before they get fired. It makes it so difficult to be fired and such a long process that they will never be fired unless they commit a major crime and I believe that this should change. As a teacher, we need to be at the top of our game at all times, and teachers with tenure seem like they do not always have to in order to keep their job. It is also surprising to me that student teachers do not receive the same rights as normal teachers in some states. Student teachers are practicing to become a teacher one day, and
Teachers of today are still being exposed to these ways of the past that are supposed to have been abandoned for more ethical methods and approaches to the
The only portion of the conflict the principal could have effected was the rumors and retaliation against the teacher who brought the matter to his attention. Your staff is comprised of adults and will make their own decisions as to professional behavior both on and off campus. I am sure no one had ever considered the need to discuss affairs among the staff. Once the matter was brought to the principal’s attention he needed to call the involved parties into his office and communicated a strategy for future behavior including how they behaved around one another. He most certainly should not have disclosed the identity of the person who came forward. Empathy for the person who chose to come forward and understanding their point of view in making that decision would help prevent the retaliatory attitude of the principal. Additionally, the teachers involved in the affairs needed to be documented and moved to a new campuses, not the teacher who came
Another major reason why juveniles are ending up in the juvenile justice system is because many schools have incorporate the zero tolerance policy and other extreme school disciplinary rules. In response to violent incidents in schools, such as the Columbine High School massacre, school disciplinary policies have become increasingly grave. These policies have been enacted at the school, district and state levels with the hopes of ensuring the safety of students and educators. These policies all rely on the zero tolerance policy. While it is understandable that protecting children and teachers is a priority, it is not clear that these strict policies are succeeding in improving the safety in schools.
Teachers no longer have the opportunity to discipline their students in fear of violating the student's rights. Students now dictate how classrooms are instructed. Teachers must be aware of their physical contact and ethical topics that can lead into false allegations. How can a student learn in this environment? Teachers need the ability to discipline students. Evicting the fear of lawsuits from teachers makes for a more productive atmosphere. The classroom is not the only place where safety and responsibility are weakened. Playgrounds have been...
The school is to protect the students from any wrong doing towards them. Such act, parents, school official and other authorities will be contacted. The case in Oakland County MI, opens many eyes for students and parents. The school board has responsibility to report such harm. This is not taken lightly, serious offense. Students could face years in prison, or face felonies.
He is one of three former teachers at the school investigated for inappropriate relationships with students.
This work aims to show the ethical issues that surround our justice systems correctional institutions to try and get a better understanding of how moral standards can be brought down in prisons. The issues in this paper will further bring into question the people who guard civilians from the most dangerous and volatile inmates who sit behind bars. The goal here is to determine the underlying issues or morality and justice that seem to be broken within the confines of this prison system. More and more goes into protecting the inmates and the institutions from the employees of the correctional field than ever before. Why is it that correctional officials drop morals and break ethical codes? This paper will focus on the deviance that officers commit, as well as, the deontological and utilitarian side of the actions taken. A look into what can be done to put an end to ethical issues will be assessed also.
The term “ethics” refers to an external set of rules that have been established by an institution or organization, for example, a university, and the members are expected to follow them. On the other hand, integrity refers to an individuals’ internal set of principles that guides their actions and behavior (Czimbal and Brooks n.p.). As a rule, people are usually rewarded when they follow ethical codes of conduct by an external committee or board that monitors their behavior. For a person of high integrity, the benefits are usually intrinsic. Moreover, such individuals always make the right decisions even when they are not being watched. Therefore, this feature of character is often influenced by a person’s upbringing. In
Teacher Ethics “Ethics are defined as a set of principles of right conduct; the rules or standards governing the conduct of a person or the members of a profession” (Dictionary of the Human Language, 2000). Teachers are often put in situations that require more than just knowing the basic school rules. It is within these situations, that the ethical dilemmas occur. There is not always a right way to deal with the many daily problems that face educators, but there are ways to handle situations that are better than others. Teachers should follow and refer to a code of ethics to help teach in the most appropriate and ethical way as well as a guide to help deal with dilemmas.
