Currently, smartphones are very popular in our daily life. It integrated the function of many electronic devices such as MP3, radio and camera, which various functions are constantly developing (Camille Baker, Max Schleser, Kasia Molga, 2009). Especially the camera, it was first time designed into phone 15 years ago. In November 2000, the first phone named J- HS04 with built-in camera was sold in Japan. Since that time, camera has been being a kind of standard configuration of smartphone and being advanced from 0.11-megapixel to 41-megapixel year by year (Kjeldskoy, 2014, p12). This is a 90 minutes film and also a long film which made by smartphone and showing on a famous film festival - Sundance film festival. Although it is not the first film made by smartphone, it likes a milestone of filmmaking to show people that film can be made by smartphone with high quality. Tangerine is a feature film, which told a story about the chaotic relationships among two transgender prostitutes, a pimp and pimp’s lover. If a story is an interesting whatever the equipment used for making it into film. The final production still need shown on big screen, the only difference is filming with smartphone not traditional camera. However, the overall style of this film is instant and documentary style. Documentary filmmakers should have a portable and still with a high quality of sound and visual equipment for their productions (Berkeley, 2014). There are some advantages of shooting by smartphone for documentaries. Smartphone is smaller and lighter than film camera and DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera; it is more applicable to the documentary producing that is a suddenly and temporarily producing. Tangerine is set in Hollywood and there are many shots that show the city looking unattractive and dingy. These shots serve as a stark contrast to the bright shots set against the sunset and the colorful shots of the Christmas lights seen in the night. Like the cinematography, the music and the editing also convey different tones that seem to contrast each other. The film begins with a calmly paced, Christmas themed piece consisting of melodic violins, dreamy bells, and bouncy piano chords. As soon as the song finishes, the first lines of the film, “Merry Christmas Eve bitch.” are said. Throughout the rest of film, as Sindee walks the streets looking for Chester and Dinah, loud electronic music plays and the fast paced editing adds to the energy. In later scenes, the music, editing and cinematography come together to convey a calmer more intimate tone.
