Not every event has a guaranteed outcome- sometimes, one has to take a gamble in the game of life. There are some, however, who would prefer to travel within the safe, confined lane of actions with a definite outcome. Deciding whether or not to take risks in life can be tricky, but as Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment.” This quote means that people should take risks in their endeavors, because life is precisely about trying new things and experiences. As the quote explains, taking risks in life is a vital step to success, fulfillment, and gaining more out of experiences.
One reason why Emerson’s quote illustrates a valid idea is that taking risks can lead to success. Often, taking a risk is just the jump one needs to reach his or her goal. Many successful individuals have followed this concept to success, such as the founder of the radio website Pandora, Tim Westergreen. As stated by Forbes.com, when Westergreen’s company was just starting up, it suddenly ran short on money. At the risk of falling even further into debt, Westergreen took a risk to defer the salaries of his employees. Nonetheless, Pandora was able to get back onto its feet, and has become a great success as one of the most popular music websites. Another example of an accomplishment that stemmed from taking risks is Christina McHale’s experience. As stated by Forbes.com, the now-professional tennis player quit traditional school to become homeschooled in order to focus on her dream of playing tennis. Humans are born with pursuits: some search for fame, some go after money, some seek achievements in professional fields, and some only wish their lives to be content . If one wants to become content with life, one should alter one’s old ways of living and embrace new things. Both in Cathy Jewison’s The Prospector’s Trail and Eva Lis Wuorio’s The Singing Silence, the main characters used to be dissatisfied with life. In search for true happiness, they begin to try things that they have never experienced before. At the end, the two protagonists find that their new activities can bring them happiness, and they start to live satisfying lives.

We all know that staying safe will keep us alive, but it is a boring way to live. The biggest regret a person can have is never trying what they always wanted. As mentioned before, time never stops, so it is crucial that they act now. We fight a battle before we are even born against millions of others to see who will get to the egg first and be fertilized and born. We did not come to this world to just be safe and to be afraid to do new things. We all have a reason to be here and the journey of life is to find our purpose in life. It is what makes life so great, but to get their we must take risks and overcome that fear. People are afraid of taking risks because of failure. They are afraid to fail and not get anywhere. However, that fear can be overcome is they keep pushing and keep trying and keep taking risks. Everyone has taken risks whether they be big or not, they will lead you down the path you choose in life. In the short stories Beowulf, Black Heart, and The Deep taking risks was a big part in all three. In Beowulf, there is many risks that he took, but the main one was that he risked his life to save the people that he loved. In the second book Black Heart by Mark Brazaitis, the girl risked her life to make friends with something she knew could kill her because she was so lonely. In the final book, The Deep by Anthony Doerr the main character made risks every day because he never knew if he was going to wake up to see the next.
Often people are unwilling to take opportunity, Emerson tries to show this in his aphorism. Due to the risks involved, people sometimes miss their chance at opportunities. Just like the kid unwilling to wear his shoes for fear of scuffing them, we are often caught in the same struggle between risk and desire. The kid desires to wear, and to be seen in his new shoes. But the risk of scuffing his new shoes outweighs wearing them, in his mind. People often do not realize what they’ve missed because of risk involved, until its too late. Finally the little kid decides he’s willing to accept the risk of scuffing his shoes, but by the time he tries to slip his feet into the little shows he realizes he’s outgrown them and they’ll no longer fit. Disgruntled and distraught, the kid wants to wear the shoes more than anything now that he can’t wear them. Emerson hints that we should take opportunities as they come; and never hide in the face of risk.
The adrenaline-rushing feeling of gambling offers people the idea that opportunity lies within their hands. Unfortunately, there are far too many consequences to gambling to even begin to count. To win you must play, and to win big you must play big. As more gamblers can recall their losses rather than their winnings, gamblers are often dealt with poor hands and must play the risky game to stay alive. Even though gambling has so many faults, some still fall under its corruptions because of gambling’s deceiving fallacies.
If you are not willing to try new things , you are simply cutting yourself off from reaching your full potential. Putting these imaginary restraints upon yourself disables your way of thinking , consequently pushing you away from the idea of even making the attempt to try something new. In relation to Emerson's quote , there is another quote that has a similar meaning to his. It stated , " The master has failed more times , than the beginner has tried ".
A successful person will always promote the taking of risks because a lot of times the best things in life happen when we feel scared and vulnerable. When risks are involved there is a great probability of failure. Failure is not necessarily a bad thing. Failures serve as learning experiences. Experiences where you can dissect what worked and what didn't work. But Gawande explains how, "the only failure is the failure to rescue something." He explains how risks are essential, but at the same time risks must be taken with a careful eye. The careful eye being that one must be able to distinguish when something has gone array and being able to control the situation. If you take a risk and things do not go as planned, this doesn't mean it’s a failure just yet. You must be able to adjust and attempt to rescue it. I took the risk of cheating. This does not mean it’s a failure just yet. I've become aware that things have not gone as planned. I have acknowledge that there is a problem. My job now is to change my current situation and attempt to rescue it. My situation should only be considered a failure, if and only if, I am unable to rescue and change my cheating
For example, Bill Gates, the world’s richest man, earned a scholarship to Harvard University, and took his time and spent it all on the school's computer and he knew he had potential. So he dropped out of college his sophomore year, and started a company: Microsoft. This man is what is known a as a pure risk taker. Gladwell states, “Bill gates got to do-real-time programming as an eighth grader” (12). He then evolved his company and he launched it on April 4th, 1975. He knows how to sell his products to needing customers. He interprets how to communicate with customers to attract them to his product that he wants to sell. He excelled at monopolizing his company. In all, he went way beyond just ten years. He knew that in all these events that led to his goal, he was exceedingly lucky. This does not mean he wasn't a brilliant man or that he just relied on luck. He just had excellent communication skills and knows how to sell and induce customers to buy his product, and this led him to achieve a great
Would you take a risk, knowing that there could be potential consequences? Taking a risk is the exposure of a loss and even harm. The subject of risks are a tricky. Most people aren't daring enough, and they wouldn’t gamble with their safety. On the other hand, sometimes the reward is greater, and it makes the risk worth it. Risk is a strategy that is prevalent in Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut uses the strategy of risks to show the conflicts and decisions that characters in his stories had to make. The use of conflict and decisions are used in the stories A Long Walk to Forever and Next Door” Doing this reveals an aspects of the characters identity and shows if they are willing to take any chances.
Taking a chance not only eliminates doubt in one’s self, but it emphasizes the mindset that is needed in order to manifest the unknown. Although, the act of overcoming obstacles may be demanding the process in which development transpires makes it all worth it. It is necessary to take chances because it allows for new ideas to be presented and strengthens the purpose of trial and error.

In Chapter 78 of the Tao Te Ching, it begins with the saying “Those who have the courage to dare will perish. Those who have the courage not to dare will live.” This implies that the daring ones who risks their lives will most likely end up being on the brink of danger. Yet refusing a dare is another kind of bravery and it even lessens out the risk of harm. But people does not see the value of this and they seemingly praise the daring ones who is more likely to bring danger into their lives and promote some kind of a gloom and doom.
