Ralph Waldo Emerson, A well known author , wrote a quote stating " Unless you try to do something beyond what you have mastered , you will never grow ". This statement speaks true volume because you are not challenging yourself to improve the skill sets that you have and your are limiting yourself to what you can actually achieve. His quote should be used as an inspirational guideline to help encourage others to go beyond what they have already accomplished. Getting involved in certain activities or even trying something new can allow people to explore their potential in ways they would have never done prior. By putting in the effort, you can be able to be successful within in the classroom and in any sport or elective that you may take part in. However , by limiting yourself to only what you have mastered will not allow you to grow as a person. As you mature you will realize that in order to become successful , sacrificing certain freedoms now will help you in the long run. Your objective should be to exceed others expectations of you. If you are not willing to try new things , you are simply cutting yourself off from reaching your full potential. Putting these imaginary restraints upon yourself disables your way of thinking , consequently pushing you away from the idea of even making the attempt to try something new. In relation to Emerson's quote , there is another quote that has a similar meaning to his. It stated , " The master has failed more times , than the beginner has tried ". Analyzing that phrase you can assume that those individuals who have mastered in what they specify , whether its sports or academically related , have made many mistakes along the way. The deaths per year done by guns, 80% of them are gang related. If I Grow Up, written by Todd Strasser shows the life of a male kid growing up in the projects in Chicago. DeShawn wanted didn’t want to join the gang and stay in school. But his family didn’t have money or food. His friend that was in the gang had a bunch of money. So DeShawn joined the gang because in school they didn’t teach them much, and the money that his family got was a lot more of it when he got in the gang. I think that DeShawn had a choice not to join the gang because he could get a job, could have gotten a better education, and other people have gotten out of the projects.
After reading the article, “The Myth of ‘I’m Bad at Math’” I began to think about my past learning experiences and realized that my opinions on this subject have changed drastically over the years. For the most part, I felt like this article made a lot of good points, especially considering my own experience with believing in incremental vs. fixed intelligence. Basically from the beginning of my schooling I was taught to think that some kids were just smarter than others, and that that couldn’t necessarily be changed. I think this had a lot to do with the fact that I was considered a “smart” kid: I caught onto most learning concepts easily, so people told me that I was “smarter” than other kids. If I had been a child who learned a different way, I think that I would have been taught to believe in the incremental model of intelligence very early on as to not discourage me from growing as a learner (which was exactly what teaching kids that
I agree with Emerson's statement because if you already master something that your good at and don't try new things then you can never learn. For example if I'm really good at football and I want to play basketball I can't just start on a team with knowing any of the rule. Another example would be applying for a job or trying to ride a motorcycle. Lets say I wanted to ride a motorcycle but I only knew how to drive a car. I can't just hop on a motorcycle and be able to ride it I have to learn how to ride one. I also have to take a test showing I know how to ride a motorcycle. If I only know how to drive a car and I don't want to learn how to ride a motorcycle but I want ride one I can't because I have no experience riding one.
The story I chose for this analysis is “Why, you reckon?” by Langston Hughes. IN this analysis I will be focusing on how the great depression in Harlem had effect on the story, how racism played a part, and how or if the characters were justifyied in their actions. During this time period the intense racial divide combined with the economic harships that plagued the U.S. during the 1923’s makes for an interesting story that makes you think if the charaters were really justified.
A person’s ability to succeed should not be determined by their past achievements but should instead be judged by their ability to adapt and overcome the obstacles placed in their way. To often do we allow our perception of our ability to do one thing skew the perception of our ability to do something else we hold in close relation. For example, this is often seen in children who struggle with the first sport they chose to participate in. Often their inability to perform well in one aspect of the sporting world causes them to they’ll other sports; sometimes resulting in the child giving up on sports entirely when they might actually have been successful a sport they had yet to try. If there is one thing that we all have in common with each other, it is the fear of failures. Throughout our lives we keep experimenting with new things, sometimes willingly and sometimes not. It can be something as small as starting a new hobby or something as big as moving countries, however in both these situations we will only be content if we get positive outcomes. We will only be satisfied if we get that hobby down on the first try, or if we make friends on the very first day in the new country. What we don’t realise is that a life without failures is not a life well lived, but rather uneventful.

Is never trying anything new in fear of failure a good thing? Thousands of people around the world only do what they are good at instead of trying something new. I agree with Ralph Waldo Emerson's statement "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow" because new experiences can help people learn new skills, meet new people, and change a person's attitude or character. New experiences can help people learn new skills that they might enjoy or treasure over what they have already mastered. Each attempt at something that is not previously mastered gives a person many new skills they can use to attempt to fix a problem or use in a situation.

Accomplishing your aim or purpose can be the true definition of success. You must want to achieve your goals at hand. You must want to earn everything. You really should put in the effort needed to become a successful person. Becoming a successful person requires you to be an extraordinary character. This means you have to be a very self-disciplined, competent, and trustworthy person. That allows you to become more trusted within the community and earn more respect. Learning from your mistakes is essential to your success. Every time you fail you become more knowledgeable on a subject. You can fail as many times as you want but eventually you will learn what is right from wrong. This will lead to you to become open minded and achieve success. You will have to put in the time and effort. Planning ahead allows you to have a schedule so you won’t be behind. If you have a plethora of skills, you will have a higher chance of success than other people. Skills allow you to qualify for certain positions and allow you to excel in what you need to.
