Tai Chi is a form of Martial arts also called “ moving meditation. It is based off of three major components: deep breathing, meditation and movement. The purpose of this practice is to improve overall health as well as specific ailments. To achieve the goal of the exercise it appears to be very slow moving movements with breathing techniques to relax the mind, body and soul but can be used for so much more.
According to a Chinese legend, Tai Chi was created by a Taoist monk who was inspired as he watched a crane and a snake do battle. He saw that in the battle the “snake's ability to subtly and swiftly avoid the bird's thrusts, he devised a series of self-defense techniques that do not involve meeting the opponent's force with force, but rather stress evading the blow; causing the opponent's own momentum to work against him”. This helped create over 37 movements that are used in classes that are offered by masters of Tai Chi.

If it is done properly and regularly it can help increase flexibility, balance, and coordination. The non stop flowing movements help the body deal with stress and help decrease blood pressure levels which can contribute to many conditions. This is such a unique form of exercise because older people can do it that have chronic conditions such as digestive disorders, arthritis, fibromyalgia and anxiety.
It can also help elderly people with balance to help prevent falling and injuries. Tai chi is a low impact aerobic exercise that any generation can do. In China, about 50% of participants are over the age of 50 who perform this regularly. It has been said that Tai Chi does not appeal to young generations because they are not looking to lower blood pressure or low impact exercises. About 250 million people world wide practice Tai Chi regularly but compared to yoga which has 20.4 million people in the Unites States
