Crime analysis does not replace the field work and investigative skills of sworn personnel in a police agency, but is designed to complement and add value to that work. For instance, tactical crime analysis is clearly most often used for directed patrol, strategic crime analysis is most often used for directed patrol and general information, and evaluation is used for general information and developing crime reduction strategies. Thus, the value of integrating crime analysis in a law enforcement agencies are increasing the effectiveness of its crime reduction strategies by focusing limited resources toward the problems, areas, places, and offenders that account for a disproportionate amount of crime with the intention of controlling, reducing, and preventing crime and disorder (Boba and Taylor, 2014). With an adoption, use and institutionalization of these technologies, however, are mediated by the institutional cultures and concrete social relationships that animate law enforcement as a distinct social space (McQuade, 2016). When comparing within each type of response, tactical crime analysis was used most routinely. That is, products that identify repeat call locations, crime patterns, and clusters of short-term activity are being used to direct patrol, arrest offenders, develop crime prevention responses, and for general information. While these are legitimate uses for tactical crime analysis, it is somewhat surprising that strategic crime analysis was not as important for directed patrol and developing crime prevention strategies, since these strategies are key in two predominant and effective policing approaches that are strategically focused.
