Organizational behavior is a very all encompassing class that has taught us a great deal about working with ourselves, and other people. The class has taught us through various readings, videos, movies, and even TV shows and in class activities that we have so much more to learn about ourselves and how to be effective leaders. The business world is an ever growing and ever changing place and we must do everything in our part to stay on top of these changes. We must learn, essentially, how to lead when even we may not know exactly what to do. We must learn how to motivate others in unknown times and how to handle adverse situations. Our textbook details many of the issues we have seen in Survivor, but also details the ways a manager can fix these problems. Our textbook touches upon many of the issues that we see in Survivor, especially the idea of “groupthink.” Groupthink, as the book puts it, is “A deterioration of mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgment resulting from pressure within the group” (Nelson, D. L., & Quick, J. C. 2017). This groupthink is very evident in Survivor. According to the textbook, some of the symptoms of groupthink can be peer pressure, illusions of invulnerability, and even rationalization. These symptoms of groupthink are incredibly present in Survivor, especially when it comes close to the time to vote someone off. The contestants are constantly working with and against each other to further themselves in the game. The contestants are always pressuring others to vote for a certain person, usually their weakest link. With this, many times people on the show become so confident in themselves and the game as well, that they get illusions of invulnerability. The contestants that are the most confident in their abilities are usually the ones blindsided and voted off without any idea that they would be leaving. While trying to vote others off, the contestants will exhibit “rationalization”. The contestants try to rationalize they way they are feeling and try to convince others to feel the same way through rationalization.
