The first resource that I would like to discuss would be the Aspergers Society of Ontario. The ASO is a non-profit organization that was created by parents of children with Aspergers Spectrum Disorder and concerned professionals in 2000. The ASO is the only agency in Ontario that is devoted to serving those with Aspergers Syndrome, their families and other interested individuals.
The ASO provides educational information and support to the individual with the mental disorder, their families, educators and mental health professionals, and the community to allow the individual to realize their full potential.
If a Child Youth Worker has never worked with an individual with Aspergers then this will allow them to expand on their expertise of mental disorders and learn the specific type of autism and better understand the individual. The ASO can be contacted through email or phone and will respond within 24 hours so that the individual and Child Youth Worker can have support and information immediately.
The ASO provides a service that can be beneficial for the support systems being a Child Youth Worker. The Autism Ontario for Toronto is beneficial to Child Youth Workers and will allow them to expand their expertise of mental disorders by being able to monitor the individual at the events being held to see how they are interacting with others and have the opportunity to find the child’s weaknesses and progress. It will also allow them to provide support for the child just incase incidences occur such as the child feeling over-whelmed or uncomfortable. Attending the events will allow the Child Youth Worker to put together activities that will interest the individual that can also improve on the child’s weakness.
