The book I am reading is The Saturday Boy, by Flemming. This book is about an 11-year old boy named Derek who has a father in the military. His father is a pilot who flies a Boeing AH-64A Apache in Afghanistan. Derek has a problem paying attention in school so the other kids pick on him along with the teacher, Ms. Dickinson. After they pick on him, he reads an old letter his dad sent him, trying to hold onto something in his crazy life. The topic of choice from the book is the Boeing AH-64A Apache Helicopter. This model of the helicopter was first created in 1972 and took it's first flight on September 30th, 1975. Labor trafficking is another form of human trafficking. Labor trafficking happens when employers take advantages of the social problems, economic problems, and health problems of their employees. The story of “The ‘Boys’ in the Bunkhouse” is just one of the many stories about labor trafficking. For more than 30 years, a group of men with intellectual disabilities were working under deplorable conditions. Not to mention that these men receiving a minimum pay of $65 each month for 30 years. I feel angry to see how unethical owners of business take advantage of vulnerable workers, but what makes me feel really annoyed is the fact that they use people with disabilities. The last chapter of John Okada’s No-No Boy is an evaluation of Ichiro’s choice that shapes the story. Before the beginning of the novel, Ichiro chooses not to fight the Japanese as an American soldier, and, as a result, he spends two years in jail. Ichiro’s friend, Freddie, was also a “no-no boy” who refused to fight as an American soldier. Freddie also does his jail time. However, at the end of the novel, Freddie makes the decision to go to war in a different context, and he dies (with a strong comparison to Ichiro’s good friend Kenji, who also dies as a result of going to war). As Freddie and Ichiro had made the same choices up until the final scenes of the book, Freddie serves to represent the contrast between Ichiro’s choice (to abstain from fighting) and the decision he could have made (to go to war). Ultimately, Ichiro defends his people and is on his way to becoming fulfilled. The novel ends on an optimistic note as Ichiro feels validated by all of the difficult decisions he had made.
The book Outlaw Platoon written by Sean Parnell is a soldiers’ tale of his platoon in one of the most dangerous places on earth. This book is a non-fiction riveting work that tells the story of a platoon that spent sixteen months on an operating base in the Bermel Valley, the border of Pakistan. This mission the men were sent on was part of a mission called Operation Enduring Freedom. This book is extremely relevant to the war that we are still fighting in Afghanistan and the humanitarian work that continues. We still have men in this area fighting and losing their lives everyday. It is the focus of ongoing political debates and the purpose of our involvement there is an ongoing question in the minds of many Americans. In writing this book, Parnell makes it clear in his author’s notes that he indeed was not trying to pursue one political agenda over another. His goal as not to speak of all members of the platoon and expose their identities and the types of soldiers they were but instead to showcase some of the men’s bravery and abilities during the war. Parnell believed that he owed it to the men to write something that would show the world what these men go through during combat in an honest and raw account. Another purpose of Parnell’s in writing this book is an attempt at making sure these men are given a place in American war history.
How far has the United States come towards establishing equality between whites and black? Well our founding fathers did not establish equality. Here is s a clue, they are also called the Reconstruction Amendments; which were added during the Reconstruction era following the Civil War. Recall that the Declaration of Independence was signed July 4th 1776, while the Reconstruction Amendments were the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments; they were added during the periods of 1865-1870. This is nearly a ten-decade period. Despite of these amendments we still have not achieved equality among blacks and whites. How much longer will it take? Well we are in the year 2015 and yet have a lot of ground to cover. Richard Wright was born after the Civil Rights, but before the Civil Rights Movement. The title of the book is Lord of the flies the author is a British novelist named William Golding a British he wrote the book during WWII. What Golding aimed to do was explore the dark side of humanity and at what point would we look at each other as enemies. The main characters in the book that stood out the most were Ralph, Jack, Simon, Piggy, Samneric and Rodger. They are the ones who have had the most critical change in the story.

Since he was not tall like a basketball player, he find loophole in reading book he was good at.
Americans were incarcerated during this time for acts of violence. Police officers would brutally beat those in involvement with the movement if they refused to go along with the social norm of the society and so on. Others were perhaps jumped by white men when the blacks came off as being ‘disrespectful” to their way of living. The acts of Civil Rights continued until Jim Crow laws were uplifted.
William Pollack, in his article “Inside the World of Boys: Behind the Mask of Masculinity”, discusses on how boy tries to hide behind the mask and the stereotypical of masculinity. He demonstrates how boy hide their deepest though and feelings and real self. Pollack open the essay with “a fourteen-year-old boy, he is doing badly in school and he might fail algebra, but when teacher or his parent ask about it, he said everything is just fine. He hide his true identity behind the mask, and let no one see his true self.” After read the story, I think the story is really useful source to write an essay about how boy become men and they are emotionless.
In The Things They Carried, an engaging novel of war, author Tim O’Brien shares the unique warfare experience of the Alpha Company, an assembly of American military men that set off to fight for their country in the gruesome Vietnam War. Within the novel, the author O’Brien uses the character Tim O’Brien to narrate and remark on his own experience as well as the experiences of his fellow soldiers in the Alpha Company. Throughout the story, O’Brien gives the reader a raw perspective of the Alpha Company’s military life in Vietnam. He sheds light on both the tangible and intangible things a soldier must bear as he trudges along the battlefield in hope for freedom from war and bloodshed. As the narrator, O’Brien displayed a broad imagination, retentive memory, and detailed descriptions of his past as well as present situations. 5. The author successfully uses rhetoric devices such as imagery, personification, and repetition of O’Brien to provoke deep thought and allow the reader to see and understand the burden of the war through the eyes of Tim O’Brien and his soldiers.
Richard Wright was a novelist who wrote about being black in American. He used his writings as a form of advertisement to civilize communism. Being that he was born into slavery he experienced oppression since birth. His first published novel was Uncle Tom’s Children and the book consisted of different short stories of racial oppression in the South such as lynching and the KKK. One of his most defining novels is Black Boy as he wrote about the cultural, political, racial, religion, and social issues of the late 19th century.
“Boys” by Rick Moody summarizes the life journey of two stereotypical boys and how they gain power from the experiences they face. The boys face both positive experiences and tragedies that impacts their amount of power. In the short story, the author is conveying the idea that as the boys mature they obtain more power. He shows this through the literary devices conflict, tone, and repetition.
"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" explores the beauty of a child's innocence in a time of war:
“The thing is – fear can’t hurt you any more than a dream” (“William Golding quotes.”). Fear lives to haunt and torment the person to a point of destruction and can be within everyone. Although a person is able to overcome fear, it is still very dangerous because it affects the person as well as everyone and everything around. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the boys are all so overwhelmed by fear that the island starts to recede into a state damaged beyond repair. In this case, Jack’s fear of not being leader originally starts to affect him, but it gradually starts to affect Ralph, and the rest of the boys. Ralph’s fear of survival brings out his inner savageness and an innocent life is taken away. Lastly, the boys’ fear of the beast causes them to feel so unsafe and uncertain that they are willing to do anything. As a result of the boys being consumed by these fears, it becomes the most destructive force on the island.
