The article Exxon Knew of Human Role in Climate Change in 1981, Then Funded Denial by Renee Lewis approaches the topic of the multinational corporation Exxon deliberately misleading people about human impact on global warming. In 2015, the Union of Concerned Scientists released a report detailing the deception of fossil fuel companies through internal affairs documents and emails that were leaked or disclosed due to a lawsuit (Lewis, 2015). In this report there were emails by Leonard S. Bernstein detailing that their gas fields were about 70 percent carbon dioxide and when they would have to go through the process of making the fields usable they would release that carbon dioxide. Therefore, that specific field would be the “largest point source of CO2 in the world” (Lewis, 2015). …show more content…
In a following email, Leonard Bernstein wrote “The scientific basis for the Greenhouse Effect and the potential impact of human emission of greenhouse gases such as CO2 on climate is well established and cannot be denied” (Lewis, 2015). Despite this email by Bernstein and research from other companies, Exxon denied climate change and gave over $30 million to think tanks and researches to “promote climate denial” (Lewis, 2015). When the U.S. decided to participate in the 1997 Kyoto protocol which called for the cut of greenhouse gas emissions, Exxon and similar companies argued that there was “too much uncertainty about global warming to warrant such cuts” (Lewis, 2015). The Union of Concerned Scientists report said that Exxon knew about the relationship between fossil fuels and climate change before the rest of the particular industry and the public (Lewis,
Hove, S. et al (2002) Climate Policy 2, The oil industry and climate change: strategies and ethical dilemmas, 3–18.
According to one government analysis, the crude from Canada’s oil sands will emit seventeen percent more greenhouse gas pollution than there processes used for conventional oil, making it even more controversial against environmentalists (Davenport par. 6). The concerns are reflected in great quantity of carbon in the tar sands, “Ensure that they will play an important role in whether or not climate change gets out of hand” (Clayton 2). In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A) noticed the impact it would have on greenhouse gas emissions. According to the E.P.A., “The recent drop in global oil prices might mean that contraction of the pipeline vault spur increased development of Canadian oil sands—and thus increase planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions” (Davenport par
People need to reduce the use of carbon footprints because many companies like Exxon and Keystone XL did their dirty business that effect public health and environment. Political campaigns are part of the effect in global warming because they promise to go green but never make an effort. Obama forced to solve climate but fail to do so in 2008. Obama signed a billion that support teams of energy advisors and control carbon emissions. According to Derber, big business did not support the bill and tried to get rid of it. Fracking is a process used by fossil fuel companies to extract oil and gas from shale or other deep rocks. There was a movement against fracking lead by Jill Wiener who fought for 5 years to keep fracking legalized in New York and some people were arrested in the White house for
In the film, Gore talked about the ice core drills that were taken in Antarctica for studding carbon dioxide levels in preceding years. “When the snow falls it traps little bubbles of atmosphere. They can go in and measure how much CO2 was in the atmosphere the year that snow fell.” Gore’s partner pointed at the specific part of one of the core drills and said “right here is where the US Congress passed the Clean Air Act.” He could see a significant change, “just a couple of years after that law was passed, it 's very clearly distinguishable.” The Clean Air Act was passed in December 17, 1963, and the significant change from pollutants in the atmosphere was obvious. Generation of that time have experienced clean ecosystem. But what about present? The technology and industries have grown since then. Present pollutions contaminating the atmosphere more than ever before. New similar acts must have been passed decades ago. It is disappointing when candidates who are running for president pledge to something’s just to get more votes, and once they are, they would never bother about keeping the promise. Like the Al Gore said “in 2000 my opponent pledged to regulate the CO2 and that was not a pledge that was kept.” This is immoral and unethical concerning society and nature. Today, global warming issue is also politically ignored. When Gore showed the chart with predicted CO2 level in 50 years from 2005, the
... middle of paper ... ... Just look at all the profits that Exxon makes in just one quarter. One could agree from my research it pays to be socially responsible! It was unfortunate for Exxon to have an oil spill, but they got past it, emerging as one of the worlds leading oil and natural gas producers in the world.

...nd by our position. However, the battle against global warming, GMOs and DDT alarmism is unfortunately far from the end. The alarmist environmental movements have been endorsing these swindles for many years that include some influential groups in the government, science, business and liberal media. Up to this point, the majority of the debates were based on predictions and now we are at the point where the actual facts are showing that the predictions are incorrect. The real picture of these debatable topics are becoming more clear and unless something major occurs in the near future it is going to be difficult for the environmental groups to continue to support their untruthful stories. Solomon’s article proves that today’s governments that used to support the idea of global warming are reconsidering their position and aiming to steer in a different direction.
This was the original argument used by the carbon industry to discredit climate change and global warming.
Since its discovery back in the year 1858 crude oil has been become one of the most sought after resources on the face of the planet. It is due to this fact that the oil industry has fallen into a rather odd category in the case of globalization and seeking out new markets, new labor and new customers. The reason being that the need for crude oil and fuel is always present therefore the product of oil in its basic sense sells itself and the companies do not have to go out and publicly advertise it in the sense that clothing lines and other commodities do. Oil companies must focus more on the matter of why an individual should buy their oil and along with other alternative fuels over their competitors even though in the end the companies products are the same thing. The company ExxonMobil has been the superior company in the oil industry for quite sometime now, and had plenty of success as individual companies before their merger in 1999. The reason for there success is partially due to the power they wield as the most successful company, leading to many new refineries around the world, making deals with smaller companies to gain access to new markets and are leading the world in alternative fuel research. However these things all come naturally to the biggest oil company in the industry, the real question is how they became the powerhouse they are now. That question can be answered by the way in which the company has not focused in globalizing their product of fuel and oil, but globalizing the image of the company company. This is achieved by focusing on charity in which they donate hundreds of millions of dollars, Foreign Direct Investment in areas in which they wish to expand by attempting to provide these impoverished areas wit...
The commonly debated “greenhouse effect” refers to “the global average temperature increase that has been observed over the last one hundred years or more” (Spencer). President Barack Obama addressed the issue in an effort to highlight its severity, "We have to all shoulder the responsibility for keeping the planet habitable, or we’re going to suffer the consequences – together” (Leader). The earth’s increasing atmospheric and oceanic temperatures result in climate changes due to cumulative amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. As an outcome, researchers around the globe have established that the by-product of burning fossil fuels is the main culprit of the increasing temperatures. Global carbon emissions from fossil fuels have significantly increased since 1900, as shown above from a study carried out by the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center.
Former Vice President, Al Gore’s speech, The Climate Emergency, was a highly accurate prediction of the circumstances our planet would be under in coming years. The facts relevant as of 2004 are still true in the year 2015. While many companies and individuals have learned to contribute to helping our plant go greener, the dangers of the climate change are still a pressing issue supported by scientific evidence. With occurrences such as extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and ice cap disappearances, global warming is physically being show on our planet and in order to prevent a complete reversed climate on our hemispheres, the population of Earth as a whole must ban together to reduce our carbon footprint.
There are still some believers that support that climate change is not real and that they are just made up facts so people can grab the opportunity to make money with new products that will help the world to become “cleaner.” Their arguments are that the earth always had these types of climate changes just like a natural cycle. When asked about if there is any link on how in the past decades, when humans started using fossil fuels and the changes became worst and worst, they come with a response that it is just a
Subpoint A: Not long ago, a documentary film called “An Inconvenient truth” came out in 2006. This film raised international public awareness of climate change and reenergizing the environmental movement. A former U.S Vice president Al Gore campaigned to educate citizens about global warming through a simp...
The burning of fossil fuels has greatly harmed our environment and is a leading cause as to why climate change has become such a threat to our way of living. In May of 2013, the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere reached 400 parts per million, an increase of more than 40 percent since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. This could cause the Arctic Ocean to be nearly ice-free during the summer by 2020(Overland and Wang, 2013).
The Great Global Warming Swindle has been the most widely watched documentary critical of the scientific consensus that climate change is due to anthropogenic activities. Aired in 2007 in the United Kingdom, the documentary claimed to debunk the “myth” of manmade global climate change, exposing it as a vast conspiracy designed to gain funding for research and push an environmental agenda that is especially harmful to the developing world. Directed by British producer Martin Durkin, the documentary includes discussion with a number of scientists who are skeptical of anthropogenic global warming and claim that there viewpoints are being deliberately censored in favor of the politically correct consensus.
