In 2008, Nicholas Carr decided to publish his article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” to express his point of view on the Internet and how it has a negative effect on people. The author’s motivation to write the article was his personal experience on how the time he spends online is “chipping away” his “capacity for concentration” (Nicholas Carr 151) in reading, and his ability to immerse himself in contemplative reflection of the content. Nicholas Carr suggests that Google and the ability to access information quickly is shrinking attention spans, and changing the form of intelligence in people.
The author talks about how after starting to use the internet, “immersing myself in a book or a lengthy article use to be easy. The deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle.” ( Nicholas Carr 150) Asking his friends and acquaintances if they were having similar problems when it comes to reading and not being able to focus only proved his theory. Many people don’t like Wikipedia because anyone is able to edit the information therefore it is seen as a website of no credibility or value.
