Both within and beyond their sport of choice, student athletes bring a tremendous amount of benefits to the institutions that they are a part of. The prospect of having a star athlete, for example, can be incredibly valuable to a university because of the wealth of opportunities that athlete can subsequently create. One of the most understated but undoubtedly influential factors in a potential student’s decision to attend any one university is the experience that the university can offer them. On-campus life is incredibly important for many students, and a thriving college sports program can help to influence a prospective student in their decision to apply or attend that institution in the future (Silverthorne, 2013, para. 3). It should be noted, however, that there are also benefits to paying student athletes that extend beyond their personal gain. If one of the primary concerns for academic institutions is to preserve the sanctity of education and ensure that student athletes receive a complete education, paying them will facilitate this process. By paying students while they are in studying in college, student athletes will find themselves incentivized to pursue academic paths that they otherwise might not. Many student athletes attend college simply as a prerequisite to enter a professional league; this is especially true for basketball players who are only required to attend college for one year before being able to declare for the NBA draft. Aren’t they already receiving benefits from a full-ride scholarship? But then an athlete will get caught up in a scandal like Johnny Manziel, where he signed footballs for money.. then you think well why shouldn’t he receive that money? And you then contradict yourself. But shouldn’t they receive money from outside sources, and then the benefits from the school. Yet an athlete from Alabama can only receive benefits from a scholarship.. That doesn’t seem right. You would want to be payed when the opportunity arises. It should only be fair these players get a piece of the revenue pie, after all they are the ones creating the revenue. The players should be getting benefits to allow them to pay for basic college needs, grow up to be responsible adults, and allow the NCAA to thrive.
