How important a contribution does the script or storyboard make to any given film? Storyboards are critical in the pre-production for most films, as they demonstrate how the camera will move throughout scenes, as well as the way the scene is organised through the mise en scene. Alongside this it helps the Director develop a view of what his final film will look like, as Mark Simon states, ‘The storyboard is an illustrated view, like a comic book, of how the producer or director envisions the final edited version of a product to look’ (Simon, 2000 pp. 3), I have created my own storyboard for a short scene, and I will analyse what I have done, and discuss some of the issues that I came across. I use quiet a lot of handheld tracking shots to give off the feeling that he is not on his own, and that there is something else not completely human in his presence, it also mirrors the unstableness of the protagonist and the current situation. I also used close ups often to demonstrate reactions to what’s happening around him, for example when he sees the image of his dead wife, and then again when he hears her voice, this connects the two characters as well as building suspense. One aspect that I’ve used the best is the use of lighting. When the lights first flicker off he has only the light of his lighter to guide him, this builds tension as you don’t know what he is going to find and when he will find it, but it also introduces an important aspect of the mise en scene that becomes a strong signifier. Then when the lights constantly flicker on and off it’s usually when something dramatic is happening, and finally the overpowering bright white light from the door starts off with connotations of it being angelic, heavenly and peaceful when really it’s just the florescent bright lights of a psychiatric …show more content…

They demonstrate how much effort goes into getting each shot perfect and so they flow into the next one, ultimately so the continuity isn’t broken, which is one of the most important issues off creating a film as a whole. Through learning this and applying to my own storyboard I believe that I developed a good beginning to a film, the use of mise en scene and genre conventions within my storyboard was most defiantly my strong point. However if I had more time to work on it I might have thought of a brief script beforehand for more direction, and potentially would have added more quick shots to build even more suspense and make it seem more
