Sports Discrimination Against Women
Have you ever been told that “you’re just a girl?” Or that “girls can’t play sports or do the same activities that boys do? ” Well, this has been a perpetual conflict for many years. In a recent study, three-fourths of the women received discouraging comments about their capability in playing sports. Women are faced with stereotypes and scrutiny. A well-known stereotype is that women are not equal to men in sports. This leads them to feel less capable of playing sports and makes them feel fragile. Discrimination against women in sports is unfair and unequal to women, and society needs to put a stop to it. Therefore, at Weddington Middle School, we should raise money for the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Women are also struggling with equal pay for getting college scholarships and or professional sports. Male college athletes receive 36% more college scholarship dollars than female college athletes. This means they receive 176 million more scholarship dollars than female athletes every year. The United States women's national soccer team earn as little as 40% of what the men’s national team made (even after they went to the team’s third World Cup championship). Goalkeeper Hope Solo says, “The numbers speak for themselves. We are the best in the world, have three World Cup championships and four Olympic championships. They get paid more to just show up then we get paid to win major championships.” A men’s player receives $5,000 for a loss in a friendly match. They can receive as much as $17,625 for a win against a rival opponent. A women’s player receives $1,350 for a similar game, but only if they win. They receive no bonuses for tying or losing.
