You’ve probably heard of stem cells as the genetically modified cells, which makes us humans capable of manipulating our genetic information to get optimal results. It would be amazing to change how our genetics build us, right? Maybe, depending on your opinion, but the hidden truth about stem cell research is it is not as good as some claim it to be. There are a lot of possible consequences when dealing with stem cell research, especially when the technology is advanced but still in the research phase. Remember when I mentioned how it can be amazing to change genetic information? The problem with stem cell research is, even if stem cells do end up being convenient to those who are unwell, the treatment is going to be very expensive because of the advanced stem cell technology. In fact, in the pie chart below, the majority of the doctors do not recommend stem cell treatments because it is too expensive for the patients to afford. The two other reasons connected to each other: the doctors do not trust the technology as it is still in the research stage, which makes it unhelpful for those in need of cures for certain diseases. According to the Stem Cell Institute, a stem cell treatment for only a single visit costs $1,950 for one area of the body plus $1,850 for each additional part. In addition, most insurances only pay a little part of the cost, but we still have to pay the majority of it. Applying this to the costs of stem cell research, each treatment is difficult to afford even with insurance coverage because there are other obstacles that people have to pay such as fees for both treatment and other kinds of taxes (income, property, sales, federal, state, etc.). For some people, this can lead to an internal dilemma on whether to get the therapy and lose most of their money or save the money and stay unwell even if there is a fatal
