Islam has started during the 7th century when the angel Gabriel met Muhammad in a cave. He told him that he was the messenger of god. At first, Muhammad thought he has went insane the minute that had happened. Muhammad only told his wife, Khadija, and a few close friends. Khadija has encouraged him to spread Islam to others. So he did, Muhammad has went to the center of Mecca and prayed with others in public. But he took an action that angered the leaders of the city, he called Arabiaś original religion a cult. The leaders and natives of Mecca, all angry and full of rage, they started picking off any followers of Islam. They beat them, tortured them, and killed them. People are called to pray 5 times a day. In the morning, noon, mid day, sun set, evening, and after nightfall. When the bell is rung, all muslims go to the local mosque. Then they wash their hands, legs, and face as a symbol of being purified and cleaned of sin. Then they go to the local praying area in the mosque and they start praying. The third of the five pillars is Zakat. It means Almsgiving. People give away exactly 2.5% of their income to the poor and homeless. The fourth of the five pillars is Siyam. That is when during the 9th month of the muslim calendar “ramadan” people fast. Fasting is when people go without food or drinks including water for a month. But they have a huge feast before and after Ramadan. And they can break their fast with small foods like apples or dates once they can tell a white thread from a black thread. The point of fasting is to teach self control so people can control whether they do something bad or not, more easily. But pregnant ladies, old people, young kids, or tourists don’t need to fast. At the end of Ramadan, they have a huge feast and they exchange gifts and give to the poor. The 5th of the 5 pillars is Hajj. It promotes pilgrimage. Islam has people go to the holy city of Mecca at least 2 times in their whole life. They go to the Ka’ba and they circle it 7 times. Then they go through a hill pass and the drink from the Zamzam well.
