Islam is the second largest religion in the world, right behind Christianity with an estimated 1.6 billion global members as of 2010. Over the [past century the number of African Muslims has skyrocketed and become the second most popular religion in the area with Christianity only slightly ahead of it in terms of numbers. With these high numbers, just like with any group with many people in it, conflict happens and is unavoidable. The number of Muslims has increased greatly. “The number of Muslims living between the Sahara Desert and the Cape of Good Hope has increased more than 20-fold, raising from 11 million to 24 million in 2010” (Liu). There are many different views on Christianity through the eyes of Muslims. If asked about how Muslims see the treatment of Christian women, they would generally say Christians are tolerant, honest, and respectful of women. When it comes to conflict, Muslims prefer it to be handled by someone else rather than themselves. “The Muslims in nearly all countries support allowing leaders and judges to use their religious beliefs when deciding family and property disputes” (Liu). When there are consequences, “the whole Muslim community is not punished as a whole for the actions of one person”
Believers in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are found on every continent, but tend to be concentrated in North and South America, Europe, Australia, Western Asia and North Africa. Christianity and Islam are growing influences in sub-Saharan Africa, often replacing indigenous faiths. By studying the teachings of the western religions, we can comprehend the respectable position of women in the society and the urgent need to remove all social and gender barriers
The town of Mecca was the birthplace of Islam, at first the leaders of the city refused the changing of this new religion and forced Muhammad to leave. Muhammad returned and preached to the people about what he had heard, that there is only one god. Islam spread quickly for two main reasons they are the message and military conquest. Some people believe that trade routes were most important reason in Islam expansion. People travel through Mecca and trade there while on their way to other cities such as Aden, Medina, and Petra.(Document A)
Africans though hesitant, acquiescently submitted into the insistent requests of Arabians for Islamic conversion for several reasons. One reason is because Sundiata, ruler of Mali, practiced Islam. Sundiata practiced Islam intermixed with the traditional western African religions. This is known as syncretism, or combining two starkly different cultures or religions into one. The second reason was because during the fifteenth century, the Muslims took over the institution of trade and commerce. The spread of Islam was beneficial to the development of West Africa because it helped to unify the people. Most people are unified by religion, language, or excogitation. It was understood that power most gracefully exists when there is (one) central idea. Furthermore, they also believed that converting to Islam would bring them closer to the Arabian traders to get better deals on the goods. This proved to be true considering that in Sundiata, his adherence to Islam allowed him to network, negotiate policies, and form global
One of the reasons why Islam spread so quickly was because of the trading that was happening about the time islam first began. The people how were trading goods with the muslims would spread the word about muhammad in their home towns. Muhammad lived in Mecca, which was a very important and rich town . Mecca was a major crossroads for for the caravan trade. Everything from silk to spices came through Mecca. People from every direction came to Mecca to trade. Muhammad and his followers would tell the traders about Islam and some

Because of Islam’s holy book, The Qur’an revolved a lot around the sacred language, Arabic, which was very beneficial for trade. Since the text in The Qur’an was in Arabic, it helped spread language, religion and culture when people traded it (Outside Source: Spread of Islam Background Reading Packet). This helped spread Islam because a lot of people read it, they may have thought of the same way and told themselves that they should become and adherent (Adherent: “Sticking to” or “ Having Faith in”) to Islam (Doc
The Muslim Empire began to expand vastly under the Umayyads, with the empire becoming so large many people were converting to Islam religion. The Umayyads were the second of the four major caliphates after the death of Muhammad. The Empire used many different ways to spread the Islamic civilization consisting of war, classes, and appeal. The Islamic civilization spread so strongly because of the way it allured the common man.
Islam is a major world religion. Its origin can be traced back to 610 CE in Arabia. The basis of this religion is the revelations to the prophet Mohammad. Dissatisfied with his life, he traveled to deserts, hills, and the wilderness surrounding Mecca, where he lived, to meditate and reflect. He became a new man through his revelations, which many of his followers believe Allah transmitted to him through his angel Gabriel. Islam was originally an Arab religion, but many different beliefs and practices were added to it, making it extremely popular and aiding in its rapid spread. This new religion spread to many different areas surrounding Arabia, both under Mohammad and after his death. The Muslim Empire grew to encompass Spain and the Eastern Roman Empire as well Persia and Africa. Many different practices and methods were used to spread Islam. The religion itself was appealing to, in addition to the inhabitants of Arabia, other people in the surrounding areas because of its distinct religious beliefs and practices, such as the five pillars, as well as the humility and prayerfulness of the Islamic people. They fought cruel, vicious wars with their enemies. Many different things motivated the warriors to expand, but above all, the riches they would gain from the people of the Fertile Crescent encouraged them to expand.
Along with Muhammad’s influence on Islam, trade routes also provided a significant impact on the spread of Islam. The most important and remembered trade routes were the Silk Roads and the Indian Ocean trade route. In these trade routes, along w...
Even though the European worlds have tried to claim Christianity as their religion, the teachings of Christianity are of universal application. Musa A.B Gaiya noted that, “There is strength in the Christian present in Africa they first dates from the apostolic period. It first entered Egypt and quickly spread to other [part of North Africa, namely Ethiopia, Nubia, and Maghreb area. These means Christianity was indigenized since Africa were themselves instrumental in the spread of the gospel” this has made Christianity not to be considered as a foreign religion. “Historically Christianity was thriving in Africa long before it reach American and British where most of the protestant missionaries come from. We can therefore call Christianity an Africa religion” . We may there...
The spread of Islam in Africa had taken course from a number of factors, including external and internal forces. After my analyzing of the spread of Islam in Africa, I have gather three main themes that stuck out during the expansion of Islam: Islam and trade, the conversion conditions of Islam, and the economics/political development involving Islam. These three themes provide great insight on how Islam started to spread through out Africa. Through trade the culture and religion of Islam was spread to many different areas. This correlates to the conversion of different people, which helped spread Islam. By these conversions Islam was able to establish Islamic states, which played a factor in the development of strong economic and political
The conversion to Christianity took place when Christian supporters visited Africa during trading deals and Christianity was the source of commercial development in the African nation” (Bentley et al, 2008 p 297). Along with the arrival of Christianity, (Bentley et al, 2008 ) states that “Islam, also a religion of salvation, reached Africa via trade routes as well and that some merchants were fascinated by Islam’s cultural establishment, which enable them to conduct business relationships with other Muslim merchants” (p 297). While Christianity established a foothold in the African kingdom, (AllAboutReligion, 2010) points out that “The spread of Christianity throughout Egypt and Northern Africa… was rapid and intense… “(para 3).
The spread of Islam throughout the African continent was predominantly influenced by the trading routes in North and East Africa. While Islam was very influential in the political and economic sphere of these areas, many of the original practices and traditions of Africa remained. The dominant people who facilitated the spread of Islam throughout the continent were the elite of Africa, such as the kings, and the traders themselves. While the spread of religion is typically looked at as a spreading of faith or a way to exclude yourself from warring nations, Africa’s conversion to Islam was incredibly economical and political. Primary sources from the time period, like Meadows of Gold, serve to further highlight how the effects of trade and commerce were able to have so much impact on the spread of Islam throughout the continent.
One characteristic belief of Islam that contradicts Christianity is Sharia law. Sharia law is defined as “the law, seen as deriving from the Koran” (Dictionary.com). Under Sharia law Muslims cannot
In this book , Esposito provides a succinct, up-to-date survey of the Islamic experience, an introduction to the faith, belief, and practice of Islam from its origins to its contemporary resurgence. He traces the emergence and development of this dynamic faith and its impact on world history and politics. He discusses the formation of Islamic belief and practice (law, theology, philosophy, and mysticism), chronicling the struggle of Muslims to define and adhere to their Islamic way of life. Equally important is the essential information Esposito provides on the contemporary world of Islam, from Muslim responses to the challenges of colonialism and modernization to the reassertion of Islam in politics and society.
