When I graduate from UW-Parkside in 2021 with a degree in Sport Management, I intend to find a job or career in that field. Obviously, I am going to get what I can take as a job when I get out of college, but we all have some careers that really interest us in the industry. Three career that interest me in the sports management field are sports marketing, equipment manager, and sports scout.
One of the careers that interest me in the sports management field is sports marketing. I happened to do my job shadow with some who does sports marketing and it turns out the job is very challenging and rewarding. Being an equipment manager is intriguing for me because you get to be a part of the team in helping prepare their uniforms and making sure everything is all ready to rock and roll for game day. Being around the locker room or on the field during the games would make me feel like I am a part of the players success in helping them with equipment problems or just getting what they need. An equipment managers main reasonability is procuring, supervising, and maintaining inventories, such as all athletic uniform and equipment of a specific athletic team. Equipment managers are also responsible for transporting equipment, ensuring uniforms and athletic equipment are clean, well stocked, and ready to go, and for setting up the equipment and uniforms on practice and game days. Equipment managers can oversee other positions in the same field or related to the same field such as assistant equipment manager. The education required at a minimum is a high school education. If you want to work with more popular teams or organizations you need experience and a preferred bachelor’s degree. A certification you might need is to be a member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA). Experiences outside of an educational degree is required if you want to become a professional equipment manager. First, I would look for internships with local teams or minor league team. I might even talk to the Parkside athletic director and see if they have any type of position. Being able to be the equipment manager for a team at Parkside would help fulfil the 1,800 hours of being a student equipment manager. After that, to fill my work experience required for the sport management degree I would try to find an internship with a minor league or professional team in the Chicago, Milwaukee area to get real life experience and help gain knowledge of what it is like working in the professional industry. Some of the stepping stones you can take to being an equipment manager is to get experience and then work your way up. Try to get experience while in college so you can have that on your resume once you graduate and be ahead of the game. Experience will open up doors to working or being a professional equipment manage. Also, another stepping stone is to become a member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association. The average salary for an equipment manager from salary.com is $85,638 a year. Most range from $76,727-$98,936, it also depends on if you are working for a professional team or not.
