For this qualitative study, the following key terms are essential to the topic on the impact of spiritual leadership in the workplace.
Spiritual Leadership. Spiritual leadership is described as a new leadership style focusing on the spiritual well-being of leader, follower, and organization (Fry & Cohen, 2009). Fry, Kisselburgh, and Butts explained spiritual leadership as a transformative, relational process translating self, others, and organizations (as cited in Nicolae et al., 2013). The leader’s actions, mindset, and beliefs inspire self and others intrinsically, increasing spiritual well-being through vision, hope/faith, altruistic love, meaning/calling, and membership. Effective leadership performance has traditionally been defined by financial measures and extrinsic motivation such as monetary rewards. However, spiritual leadership expands how effective leadership performance is measured by including non-financial measures such as increased employee output, commitment, retention, growth, and decreased absenteeism (Fry & Cohen, 2009). Creating a sense of community, appreciation, and authentic concern between leader and follower, while making a difference, is the key to this accomplishment. Spiritual leadership produces a culture where the spiritual needs of the individual and the leader are met, nurtured, and valued (Yusof & Tahir, 2011). This leadership style fosters empowerment, creativity, higher levels of personal and professional contentment, and improved health (Fry & Cohen, 2009). Additionally, spiritual leaders teach self-governance and self-awareness.
