First we will start off with the question, what specific restrictions were placed on slaves? One of the slave codes that were placed on the slave was "Slaves were forbidden to leave the owner’s property unless they obtained permission or were accompanied by a white person." As we see in this slave code slaves were not allowed to leave the property unless they were with a white person. One more slave code there was "Any slave attempting to run away and leave the colony received the death penalty." In this one, as we can see is if a slave tries to run away they get a death penalty. Slavery in America was a terrible thing, but no one knows about the laws that went along with slavery called slave codes. Slave codes were laws that were designated by each southern slave state (including Delaware even though it is considered a northern state) that were to be followed by slaves and their owners. Slave codes were closely associated with black codes. Black codes were in place for the free black people living in America, which was after the abolishment of slavery in 1865. Slave codes were laws that were inhumane and were in favor of the white slave owners. Slave codes were also the foundation of the Jim Crow laws of the south which furthered the oppression of black people.
After the Civil War, in 1865, the southern plantation owners were left with minimal labor. They were bitter over the outcome of the war and wanted to keep African Americans under their control. Black Codes were unique to the southern states, and each state had their own variation of them. In general, the codes compelled the freedmen to work. Any unemployed black could be arrested and charged with vagrancy. The ones that did work had hours, duties, and types of jobs dictated to them. Codes were also developed to restrict blacks from becoming successful. They discouraged owning and selling property, and raising and selling their own crops. Blacks were often prohibited from entering town without written permission from a white employer. A black found after 10 p.m. without a note could be arrested. Black Codes was a name given to laws passed by southern governments established during the presidency of Andrew Johnson. These laws imposed severe restrictions on freed slaves such as prohibiting their right to vote, forbidding them to sit on juries, limiting their right to testify against white men, carrying weapons in public places and working in certain occupations.
South Carolina’s slave codes were based off of the English slave codes of 1688 that were employed in Barbados. South Carolina’s slave codes where the baseline for slave patrols, giving them the rights to beat, abuse and even kill slaves thought to be in violation of their codes, as well as giving slave owners totality of their slaves. Not only where these punishments if they tried to escape, but the punishments that may have been given if caught escaping where nothing compared to what could have been done just to keep the slaves in check. Being the big difference between the both of them is the fact the owners could almost do whatever they liked to their ‘property’, with some stories of the slaves even being branded.

The goals of slave owners were to make their slaves dependent on them. Slaves were not allowed to learn to read or write, their movement and behavior was constantly restricted. There were many masters that took sexual liberties with enslaved women, and they would reward obedient slave behaviors with favors. Meanwhile, rebellious or misbehaved slaves were brutally punished. Strict hierarchy amongst the slaves made it less likely to conspire against their masters and helped keep them divided from one another. They were allowed to marry and have children. The slave kids that were born while they were enslaved were not considered to be slaves, but to be free under the law. For most American’s especially African Americans, the abolition of slavery in 1865 was a significant point in history, but for African Americans, although slavery was abolished it gave root for a new form of slavery that showed to be equally as terrorizing for blacks. In the novel Slavery by Another Name, by Douglas Blackmon he examines the reconstruction era, which provided a form of coerced labor in a convict leasing system, where many African Americans were convicted on triumphed up charges for decades.
