Southern gothic is uniquely rooted in the south. Southern gothic is a genre that actually made the authors want the people to see the problems that surround you instead of just looking away from. Southern takes on many traits such as grotesque and macabre also southern blindness . “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, “ The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson and also “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor in which all stories portrayed these traits. Southern gothic came in the early twenty century , which is rooted in gothic style. Writers concocted these wild, frightening but also interesting scenarios , in which mysterious secrets and no supernatural occurrences. In the short story there are three traits. “My daddy said I was a different breed.” So in the story he doesn't fit in with the norm of society. He has done very bad things that are looked down upon , but he is truthful when it comes to telling about himself to his grandmother.That even though he isn't a good man he isn't the worst out there , he owned up to it which demonstrates being an outsider. Another trait that is demonstrated is disturbed personalities. “The grandmother couldn't name what the shirt reminded her of.” This is disturbing because she just seen Bailey with the exact same shirt on, and what more crazy is that the whole time when she was talking to The Misfit she did not once think about or say anything about her son and grandson John Wesley. Another trait is good vs evil. Flannery O’Connor dramatizes the struggle between good vs evil. The Misfit a convicted serial killer represents evil , while the Grandmother in her way , tries to embodys goodness. Prior to meeting The Misfit the Grandmother proved herself to be shallow and selfish and only death can bring out the goodness in her. The last trait is social class. The grandmother gives great importance to being a “ lady” , and her ideas about what that is old-fashioned, somewhat upper-crust south. Feels superior to others. The conflict is person vs society because no one intentionally did anything to her for her to write those letters , she was just overly affected by every little thing they did. It was society she was against she “believed” she was protecting the town from evil. Another trait is disturbed personalities. “She thought of writing one more letter , to the head of the school board, asking how a teacher like Billy Moores could afford a new convertible.” Miss Strangeworth believes she has the right to say what she pleases. She has this pictured of her like she is some type god that can tell you what your going to do, which in reality she is just a normal women.she believed that she was doing no wrong only good which made her look like a bad person who is messing with people's lives. The last trait is social structure. Miss Strangeworth goal is to rid the town town of evil that is in the people that is living here.She has a very strict way of thinking and how she does things and if anybody does something outside of her normal than she believes that they are doing something
