The essay that follows will critically reflect on the process where I discuss how I have developed my professional and personal skills in a practice based setting. Similarly, where also there’s still room for further development. This essay will be written in first person. This will be presented with commentary and evidence. Thirdly, I will interlink theory into my process of learning and reflect why it’s important to use different learning styles and reflective models to improve your skills. Johns model of reflective guidelines requires you to ‘Look in’ and ‘Look out’. I will follow this reflective model throughout my essay. I initially chose the MSW course at Durham University as I wanted to become a social worker. I studied my undergraduate degree at Teesside University, ‘Working with children and Young People’ and soon became very familiar with the ethos of the Social Work, safeguarding, sociology and phycology. Discovering this knowledge and knowing I had a similar mind-set, led me to make this choice as a career. My first placement lasted 70 days. This was in a non- statutory setting, although I had lots of opportunity to gain experience within the statutory sector through connections within my placement. Placements are a vital experience, where you learn many skills that cannot be taught within a university setting, and they really give you a taster of what real practice is like. I really enjoy the entire course
