My social problem is Nevada unemployment. But since, Las Vegas is one of the major cities in Nevada, I’m going to concentrate on the unemployment rates on Las Vegas compared to other metropolitan areas. This is a social problem that is occurring in other cities, but it is more prevalent in Las Vegas than in other cities and I want to know why Las Vegas is one of the places with the highest unemployment rate. This is a sociologically interesting because I want to know why Las Vegas being such a tourist city, is still facing unemployment. Reading the Las Vegas Review-Journal, I was able to see that since 2010 Las Vegas have lost about 180,000 jobs, including 83,000 positions in construction, and about 43,000 jobs in leisure and hospitality. (Robinson). In this article it also talked about the casinos being affected by the economy, now the casinos are only employing 1 person for each hotel room. This means that the casinos are not hiring as many people as before and this cause for people to be unemployed. My brother had a really good job, but because the company had financial problems they had to go several people go, and my brother was one of them. It was really hard for him to find a job, he was jobless for about a month. My brother had to go to another town in order to find a job. This topic is also interesting to me because I see how not having work experience can also affect you. I have applied for almost every job, but because of my lack of work experience it is very hard for those companies to hire you. I want to see how Las Vegas is dealing with the unemployment rates, are they only hiring people with an excellent work history? Or are the companies not hiring at all in order to maintain their sales. Because of all of those reasons, I decided I wanted to write my paper on the unemployment rate in Las Vegas
