Social media has become a new way of communicating and has been part of mainstream society in the last few years. Social media is a group of websites and applications that enable users to create, share and participate in social networking. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are just a few main attractions of social networks. These are websites that provide all communities the opportunity to create an account to share opinions, ideas, and feelings on the internet. Social media in Dominican Republic has been an important way to connect with presidential elections around the world. Because of that connection, most Dominicans are already influenced to a specific political party when they come to United States of America. The highest impact of social media in presidential election was in 2008 when a black man, Barack Obama, was elected to be the president of United States of America. With an online campaign known as “Yes we can” created by the Obama staff, Americans found a virtual opportunity to discuss that year’s presidential election. For example, in DR this campaign shook social media. Everybody was talking and posting their opinions about the elected black candidate. Candidates in the 2016 presidential election are taking advantage of this virtual platform increasing their power of influence using online campaign. The most recent example is the famous case of Donald Trump. A little research on social media shows the reaction of people about what Mr. Trump has said in his first discourse.
