One of the features is based on a mechanism called the reward systems, which is applied in snapchat score. The snapchat scores are points accumulated with the number of “snaps” you send and receive, and allows users to compare themselves with other people’s scores. This game-like aspect is accommodated by trophies, which users could earn by numerous achievements assigned to them, that will be unlocked with frequent usage. These features creates a sense that you are being awarded by your accomplishments, where you get a reward for your success. An article by Bill Davidow in The Atlantic, explains the neuroscience about how these reward system affects our brains. “...Achieving a goal or anticipating the reward of [a] new content for completing a task can excite the neurons in the ventral tegmental area of the midbrain, which releases the neurotransmitter dopamine into the brain's pleasure centers. This in turn causes the experience to be perceived as pleasurable.” (Davidow). With dopamine releases triggered by increasing scores and trophies, people become obsessed with the pleasure-stimulating experience that this service provide …show more content…
The company explains that streaks are created when you consecutively “snapped each other (not chatted) within 24 hours for more than three consecutive days.”(Snapchat). The number of days you streak with someone will continue to increase if you keep snapping, thus forming an obligation to maintain the streak. It becomes an obligation, because of its representation of the amount of friendship or love in your actual relationship, that seems to be reflected in these numbers of streaks. This social attachment created by companies, manipulate users to become obliged to these numbers, establishing a necessity to open, snap, and send everyday. In this way, Snapchat is creating an addiction for users to keep on
In the essay “Graduation Inflation”, by Amy Dickinson, she explains how celebrating too often can diminish the actual purpose of celebrating. When we are addicted to celebrating every little thing, it can be problematic as excessive rewards and commendatory certificates can dull out the celebrating experience. Consequently, when a big event does occur, it might seem less significant. Over-commending reduces the value of celebrating events that are more worthy; for example, cases such as winning the league championship might seem less important when celebrating becomes frequent. However, when people get rewarded, especially children, they receive a feeling of greatness where their accomplishments feel extraordinary which induces their motivation and determinism. Nonetheless, celebrating gives a person the incentive to do better in the future and serve as a great confidence booster as well. Dickinson holds some truth that over-celebrating can lead to less meaning in noteworthy events; however, celebrating frequently can be used as a tactic to encourage motivation, determination, and self-confidence.
Many people make assumptions on what things are without doing research, I admit I have done the same. People seemed to have made assumptions especially on what happens when Net Neutrality was repealed. People assumed that Snapchat and social media was going to be affected, but realistically it was internet in general including texting which is already throttled.
Today, modern technology has changed our way of life in many different ways. We spend most of our time staring into our phones and do not realize our surroundings. According to Jean Twenge, the author of “ Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation”, ninety-two percent of teens report going online at least once a day, and fifty-six percent admit they go online several times a day. This may sound unrealistic but why do we spend so much time on social media? In “ Our Minds Can Be Hijacked”, an article by Paul Lewis, Lewis interviews Google, Twitter, and Facebook workers who helped make technology so addictive and demonstrates how we can prevent ourselves from being harmed by it. I believe companies are partially responsible for creating addiction

Snapchat is a social media, mobile application that uses a smartphone camera in order to take pictures or videos to use as messages. These “Snaps” can then be edited with filters ranging from overlays to facial manipulation (called lenses) [] which can be sent to others. The Snaps then disappear after a certain set amount of time or can be posted to a “Story” which is a set of snaps viewable for 24h to an individual’s followers. The application also features a “discover” portion in which media outlets can compile a set of snaps into individual magazine like compilations. These features have somehow resulted in a cultural phenomenon unveiling yet another social media application with a niche all its own. The implications of this camera dominant
Over 100 million people use snapchat daily, it has changed the market by creating a view that the internet is not forever and has taken the world by change for the better. Snapchat is a social media app created by Evan Spiegal that allows you to communicate through short disappearing messages, photos, or videos. Either to a select friend or to everyone on your story. “Once you load the app and login, you can take a photo, edit it, add a caption or other “doodles.” Then you select the friends to send the photo to and set a timer from 1 to 10 seconds,”(Parker).
In a sense the app has allowed for users to act accordingly to the everyday behavior. It has became very popular amongst teenagers mainly. This social media app was able to take a different stance in communicating with people, instead of having them post pictures or comments digitally which will remain forever for everyone to see, they make it temporary. Snapchat managed to make it so that the people can send messages or short videos that would be deleted shortly after watching them, never to be seen again. It’s changed how the every social media works, rather than letting something simply as a post to drag you down forever.

Disruption – The major disruption caused by this revolting technology is in the conventional social media industry. Snapchat has gained popularity with ravishing rates and it seems to have an even brighter future. Social media is all about narrating one’s experiences to a customized audience, and even though the industry leaders Facebook and twitter have successfully captured the essence of the purpose, Snapchat is challenging the game leaders in a way seeming threatening to them. There are many popular social media apps which help us to connect with friends and family. Apps which aid us in sharing interesting articles, our special moments of life or everyday activities. Such social media apps as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. give us a fantastic opportunity to discuss issues, to interact with people from another country and to make lots of friends. Snapchat, is one such app that entertains us and gives us a chance to have fun with friends and relatives.
Now with the occurrence of ‘Snapchat Maps’ it makes the feeling of being isolated even harder as people can now see when their ‘friends’ are meeting up and hanging out without them. Instagram has been proven to be the most problematic social media app for teens as people choose only to show the ‘perfect’ side of their lives. This app although it can be argued that it has its benefits, where individuals can search up various quotes from pages that relate to them right now, however the down side to this is that more often than not the searches are for when they are feeling down so the result only makes them feel worse. Most images posted by ‘idols’ are edited and filtered in order to seem perfect. What you don’t see is the hours spent deciding and hundreds of pictures taken in order to find the right one.
[IMAGE] A simple model of human motivation is shown as above. People have basic needs – such as need for food, achievement or monetary gain – which translate into an internal tension that motivates specific behaviour with which to fulfill the need. To the extent that the behaviour is successful, the person is rewarded in the sense that the need is satisfied. The reward also inform the person that the behaviour was appropriate and can be used again in the future.
Unrevealed, many like Google and Facebook have tried to buy Snapchat for millions but have been turned down. Now in their twenties Evan and Bobby have come about with this new billion dollar idea where, being that these two didn’t scrap for fame and fortune, but still viewers thought of snapchat as an offence that it was only for the wealthy to show everyone their riches. Spiegel explained to the audience that it was only a page for entertainment purposes only and to inspire other young people to go out and achieve what they want to achieve in life, giving an easy way to show everyone. Other than that, today snapchat is only four years old from the intentions of just a college class project. Spiegel, who was pursuing a degree for project design as a freshman in college, and Bobby, who was a junior working on his B.S. in Mathematical and Computational Science, both at Stanford University, had to design a project in class titled, ‘Future Freshman,’ to create a site that would forever improve the way high school students apply themselves to college. By creating snapchat it failed to do what was required of the project but then started to increase attention and from then on Spiegel and Bobby found out how well they worked
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
