How many people use Snapchat around you? This photo sharing app has increased its popularity over the years, and are still expanding its users today. Among the numerous groups they appeal to, college students are becoming increasingly involved in the negative aspects of digital developments, by becoming excessively addicted to them. How did this app become addictive? Why did it spread among young adult’s society? And what are the potential effects to these future generations? By trying to answer these questions, we could understand and decide how digital technologies are affecting our society both positively and negatively today. One of the features is based on a mechanism called the reward systems, which is applied in snapchat score. The snapchat scores are points accumulated with the number of “snaps” you send and receive, and allows users to compare themselves with other people’s scores. This game-like aspect is accommodated by trophies, which users could earn by numerous achievements assigned to them, that will be unlocked with frequent usage. These features creates a sense that you are being awarded by your accomplishments, where you get a reward for your success. An article by Bill Davidow in The Atlantic, explains the neuroscience about how these reward system affects our brains. “...Achieving a goal or anticipating the reward of [a] new content for completing a task can excite the neurons in the ventral tegmental area of the midbrain, which releases the neurotransmitter dopamine into the brain's pleasure centers. The company explains that streaks are created when you consecutively “snapped each other (not chatted) within 24 hours for more than three consecutive days.”(Snapchat). The number of days you streak with someone will continue to increase if you keep snapping, thus forming an obligation to maintain the streak. It becomes an obligation, because of its representation of the amount of friendship or love in your actual relationship, that seems to be reflected in these numbers of streaks. This social attachment created by companies, manipulate users to become obliged to these numbers, establishing a necessity to open, snap, and send everyday.
