There is no hiding that smoking is bad; but what big tobacco companies do try to hide from the general public is that it can be more harmful for the people that live their everyday lives without smoking than the smokers themselves. Smoking has been around for many years, which has enabled the idea that it should be accepted by everyone. Although other people are disturbed by the thought that they should have to think it is fair for smokers to harm themselves and others by this detrimental addiction. People who just want to be outside enjoying the air should not be punished by the people who want to put their own life in danger by smoking. Addiction itself is when a person becomes reliable on an object, where its body craves or wants something until it gets it. Addiction can be a very annoying thing, especially when trying to quit. Smoking while a teenager or young adult increases your chances of becoming addicted, rather than after the age of twenty-one (Steinburg, 2014, p.35-40). The reason being that when entering adulthood many people become set in habits and everyday life, while teenagers are more likely to change and try new things. Although, even for teenagers smoking is a different story. Guilfoyle states “Each year, kids smoke more than eight hundred million packs of cigarettes, resulting in almost half a billion dollars in cigarette company profits—and the vast majority of these products are illegally sold to kids” (Guilfoyle, 2014, p.40-46). ¬¬¬ Therefore, it is no surprise that more than a third of individuals who smoke as teenagers become daily smokers by the age of eighteen (Steinburg, 2014, p.35-40). Becoming a daily smoker is not an incident, cigarettes are made to be addicting. Cigarettes contain nicotine. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance found naturally in tobacco. It travels quickly to the brain when inhaled it can cause stress relief and relaxation. Nicotine will also raise the individuals heart rate and can heighten their mood. People become dependent to cigarettes because they crave another cigarette as soon as they finish the first which turns them to regular smokers. The cause of the craving is nicotine affecting the dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical released by neurons that sends signals to other nerve cells and plays a major role in reward motivated behavior. Dopamine is a vasodilator; so when someone gets a headache because of vessel constriction the dopamine dilates the vessels and relaxes the headache (Chastain, 2013).
