I love the goal setting piece of modeling guide helping clients with develop SMART goals we have done in class was so helpful. I have learned that developing a SMART learning goal makes sure that my goal is focused and provides a clear idea of what I want to learn. The SMART goal makes it easier to plan relevant learning activities, measure my progress toward achieving the goal and know when I have met my goal. On a personal level, I see myself developing leadership skills in this course. I have felt as though I have learned the experience; therefore I have to practice skills in way of sharing whatever I can and I appreciate the opportunity to do so, too. I am also enjoying the exchange that in class after group therapy runs the feedback given by instructor and classmate as well. I feel that this is a very thoughtful group of students and instructor and I am stretching myself to learn more and share what I have learned. The readings text book is provide knowledge of a basis for support of how to run group therapy and I find myself I have to closely grasp some skills and converted to actions. I appreciate that we are all open to sharing our experiences and this makes for an invaluable learning experience for me. In addition, the positive environment which we create in our class helps me to feel comfortable to share and to be a part of this team. Therefore, practicing group therapy model is instrument that incorporates the group members in a time perspective and opens up a conversation about groups here –and –knows and its hopes for the future. I think whether the groups are short term or long term, both require adjustment, adaptation, continual accommodations, and understanding of self. During this stage I can help groups through acknowledging the members feelings first before pushing them because emotional process of healing will came over time. In addition, I will also take a broad view of the healing process to include all levels of functioning, emotional being one, then there is mental, physical, and spiritual. Moreover, I also think my role as facilitator or co-facilitator involves strengthening the resilience factors in the groups and their members so that they could benefit themselves of group therapy services on as needed
As a student, practice is crucial to learn group therapy techniques. In order to achieve these practices, I attended 2 support groups of the same topic. Especially, when it comes to physical and emotional responsibility. In our sessions, I felt as though the group leaders provided an enormous sense of emotional support. I felt as though the environment was stable and conducive to learning. The setting at first was somewhat tense, but this was acceptable considering that many of us were unfamiliar with the group therapy process. I myself had never undergone a group therapy session, whatsoever. I did, however, appreciate the fact that the environment was quite fair and impartial. The leaders were very nonjudgmental and affirmative in their responses when it came to each and every person’s comments and feedback. Everyone was engaged and actively participated. The group was not hostile and everyone participated in the conversations as well as the exercises chosen. I also felt as though everyone was emotionally tied in. Meaning that if someone was dealing with a personal issue or their emotions were all over the place then the group was susceptible to that individuals needs. For example, we experienced group member who had experienced the loss of a friend. Immediately, each group member became involved and concerned. We were immediately concerned with whether or not she was taking time to grieve or if she was simply doing enough to take time out for herself. In all, the environment over the course of each therapy session displayed a great sense of empathy, concern and support. Another session, in particular, that truly stands out to me in terms of support was when we were asked to share our life experiences and dreams. I can recall stating that I was going to school in order to finally do something for myself. I had completed my bachelor’s degree at the age of 40 and had plans to continue education until I complete my PhD. What was so different was the fact that they understood. To reduce any unnecessary risks, I will understand each member’s limits, respect their requests, be invitational and not dictatorial, describe their behavior and not be judgmental, and avoid harsh verbal confrontations. These risks will also be discussed during the initial session of the group. I will counteract psychological risks by using various techniques such as blocking, caring confrontation, questioning, and assessing. I have taken precautionary measures as well by contacting my mentors and consultants and alerting them about the risks of the group I am running. If there is an ethical or legal concern, it will be documented and taken to a clinical supervisor. In addition, I have liability protection and malpractice insurance in place.
In conclusion, I have once again learned new information pertaining to issues and ethics in therapy, but more specifically group work, which prior to reading this chapter I really didn’t know too much about. I really found the idea of co-leadership interesting and all of the various issues when it comes to confidentiality. I had also never thought about the effect of termination without discussion within a group and how this could hurt other group members. I moreover liked the idea of the screening process and ideas to prepare for participants of group.
My smart goal is to manage my test anxiety and organization skills so that I can become more organized and a productive citizen in the future. Organization skills is one of the many qualities that employers look for in a job applicant. This skill helps them pick out a great candidate that has great organization skills as well as time management skills. This is one of the two skills that I would love to improve to keep myself organized and manage my stress and anxiety while testing under precarious circumstances.
I had several questions in my mind like this. Reading the textbook and the syllabus, I felt better. I thought this could be a good chance to discover myself, and I do not have to share anything that I want to keep. Reading Yalom's book, I actually agreed that group therapy is essential and helpful for some cases. It made me thinking that some people I know could benefit better from group therapy, so I should learn more about this and enjoy the simulation in the class.
Throughout the course of a Master’s counseling program, moments of doubt, and a lack of working knowledge are bound to play a major role in the confidence a future counselor will posses in effectively implementing interventions early on in the instructional phase of his or her career. Corey (2010) states that an effective group leader, is able to become aware of their own vulnerabilities, and take responsibility in their responses. To become aware of a possible vulnerable area, a counselor must first take a concise look into their personal strengths and weakness, and then decide to actively seek out assistance with working on vulnerabilities. In exploring the roles of an effective group leader, I have realized that within the group process, I most fear the roles of a group leader that pertain to direct confrontation of a client, I also fear that the improper implementation of a intervention could lead to potential harm of the client. Attending to these fears I hold regarding group member confrontation, and intervention implementation is the key to gaining further understanding into how I can become comfortable with these essential functions of a group leader. The current paper will take a closer look into my vulnerabilities, using current research to gain insight into how I can overcome fears, when facilitating a task, psycho-educational, counseling, and psychotherapy group.
This model is similar to socialization groups in that this model helps the clients build a report within the group and foster mutual aid networks that can be used as a tool for coping even after the group terminates. Unlike a socialization group this group also has another function and that is to help the clients gain valuable skills that will help them in life when they are experiencing a crisis or other issue that causes them emotional distress. This model is different from the remedial model because the reciprocal model is group focused and relays less on worker activity and more on group cohesiveness and mutual support to work through issues after a coping tool is learned. The worker would have regular contact with the clients but would enable and encourage the clients to look to one another in times of crisis for the solutions and help. When I set my SMART goal in order to increase my physical activity, the goal was to feel better about myself and to have a clearer mind so that I could do well with my studies this resulted in increasing my physical health and wellness. There were a few challenges of having to force myself to get out of bed even though I was feeling really anxious. I think when making a SMART goal and changing that particular behaviour there will be changes that need to be faced and overcome. These might include psychological, family and work commitments, health challenges and many other duties. Motivation and time management therefore need to be considered when making a SMART goal to make this possible and therefore can succeed in their new behaviour change.
In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice. Regarding my specific gains in competencies, I feel that I learned the most and was most likely to gain specific group facilitating competencies at the weekly class. Learning in group class is taught me the tools to use to work with groups therapy, communities and also with individuals through the process of changes. Concepts In the first chapter, the therapeutic factors that stood out to me the most was instillation of hope. There is research that says most therapies operate through hope and conviction. Group therapists do all that they can to increase the patient’s belief and confidence in group therapy that works effectively. Also, it is important that therapists believe in themselves. The most important is that members learn from others who have similar problems how therapy can work for them in their life.
