Title: The effects of sleep on mental health
The Book: Sleep is a necessary, regularly repeating occurrence of rest defined by decreased motion, decreased consciousness, and distinguishing stages of activity in the brain. (189) Eugene Aserinsky was a student at the time, and was working with Nathanial Kleitman, another sleep researcher at the University of Chicago. While studying sleeping babies, Aserinsky observed that during some periods of sleep, the babies’ eyes moved quickly, which were followed by periods of sleep where there were very few eye movements. This observation led to the discovery and definition of REM (rapid-eye movement) sleep and NREM (non-rapid eye movement)
