Students today use phones, computers, televisions, and other electronic media in order to connect with the world and research information, but this stirs up many problems regarding their school work and social lives. This is the reason some parents and teachers propose that the school should participate in “Shut Down Your Screen Week.” Although blocking usage of electronic media for an entire week would prevent students from accessing a fast and a wide range of information through the Internet, Grove should participate in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because it would limit distractions, reduce multitasking, and increase human interaction. One reason Grove should not use any electronic media for a week is to limit distractions. Many students are able to access multiple sites simultaneously, meaning that the student can research information, play games, listen to music, read the news, type words, and even communicate with others all at once. In the article “Attached to Technology and Paying a Price” by Matt Richtel, studies conducted by Stanford University professors and scientists show that multitaskers “had trouble filtering out… the irrelevant information… less efficient at juggling problems… and tended to search new information rather than accept a reward for putting older, more valuable information to work.” When students try to juggle between different tasks and websites all at once, they tend to become less focused, less efficient, and less committed.
