A widespread idea around the world, but especially in Sweden, is that school uniforms prevent creativity, but what kind of creativity do school uniforms prevent? Surely it will prevent bullies in finding their victims due to their clothing. Also, it will prevent the issue of social class distinction. That, in my opinion, is not a bad thing. A study made by NAESP where 517 principals participated revealed there are many areas in school which benefits from making school uniforms compulsory. Peer pressure and bullying being scattered down by 86% and 64% respectively were not the remarkable finding in the study, although they are some of the main points with school uniforms. Due the rise of the school pride and the discipline the students' behavior will also improve outside of school. A study made by Oxford University published in the newspaper Daily Mail revealed that the students did not want to compromise their school pride by misbehaving outside of school. The study also concluded that the students focus easier on the studies because the distraction of clothing “correct” disappeared which lead to higher achievement rate. In schools without uniforms there are unofficial dress codes made by the students. These kind of dress codes makes student fall into groups divided by clothing and that is a first step to lose school pride, safety, attendance and student achievement. In Sweden almost none of the schools have uniforms and in the last PISA report it shows that the top achievement country’s use school uniforms. School uniforms should be compulsory in Sweden so we can rise up to a top position in the PISA report once again. What Mark Mathabane talks about in his article “Appearances Are Destructive” is how students should be required to wear uniforms in public schools because uniforms encourage students to focus on education. Mathabane draws from his experience from when his sisters from South Africa went to school in the United States. One of the points he makes is how the U.S. is the only country who allow an open dress code in schools. He also talks about how students are more concerned with how they look rather than their education. Mathabane also states how “in schools Nike, Calvin Klein, Adidas, Reebok and Gucci are more familiar names to students than Zora Neale Hurston, Shakespeare, and Faulkner”. Furthermore, he states that if students do not dress in designer clothes they may be ridiculed by others. The author's final opinion is that “It's time Americans realized that the benefits of safe and effective schools far outweigh any perceived curtailment of freedom of expression brought on by dress codes.”
In society today, school-age children are under tremendous pressure to fit in with their peers and still perform well academically. I believe that school uniforms in pre-K through high school levels is an excellent way to help children succeed not only in school, but to prepare them for college and the “real world.” Three reasons why I believe school uniforms should be used in all schools is first, they are economic, next, they reduce distractions and finally, they help with social equality.
A major reason that schools should have uniforms is because students will get along better. They wouldn’t compare each other based on whose wearing what. School uniforms have become an essential part of schooling in many parts of the world. According to the article “Uniforms for Learning” it mentions that “In Britain, for example, 98% of parents of primary and secondary school students surveyed in 2007 by the Department of Education said that their schools required them.” While in other countries the idea of school uniforms is being adapted, the United States is slowly trailing behind. Many schools that regulate the dress code of school uniforms say that it helps with the feeling of safety for the students and it creates a learning environment that allows students to focus on their studies. In the United States there has been research and studies that contributes to the analysis that shows the benefits of school uniforms. In one article it stated that “In 1996, only 3% of public schools in the country required students to wear them. By 2000, this figure had risen to 12% and by 2010 to 19%” (“Uniforms”). These results show that every year the United States is slowly adapting to the idea of school uniforms into our education system. When I was a child attending elementary school all of my friends loved the way I dressed, but there was also other children that attended school with me that seemed inferior to me simply because of how I dressed. Usually the children that praised the way I dress always wore nice clothes themselves, while the others who didn’t dress ad nice would try to pick fights or make fun of children that did dress nice. Later on in my life as I approached high school the tables turned; the teenagers who dressed nice became the ones who picked on other students in school because of the low quality clothes certain students wore in school, this would result in student violence. My stance on student uniforms is that I believe every public school in the U.S should utilize school uniform policy because it reduces school violence, provides better security, increases performance, and also reduces stress on families.
Should school uniforms be required? Some say that uniforms help students focus on academics instead of fashion. Worrying more about others, rather than themselves, students pay more attention to the appearance of their peers instead of their academics. To begin, if school uniforms became apart of the school policy, students’ academics would improve phenomenally. Reasonable and realistic, students who feel better about themselves will succeed in school rather than those who have poor self-esteem. These studies were also answered by teachers and parents by marking either agree or strongly agree. When asked if school uniforms have promoted positive student behavior; 37% parents, and 95% of teachers agreed. When asked if school uniforms decreased the amount of peer pressure and bullying because students no longer had to fit in with the crowd; 47% of parents and 90% of teachers agreed. There was only one question that no teachers agreed upon but some parents agreed with. That question had to do with school uniforms taking away students personal liberty.
With uniforms, it may restrict the desire for students to dress themselves to impress or stand out. Wearing something they are comfortable with and what they love may increase their confidence level and not curb their creativity. All individuals struggle with discovering who they are and who they may want to be in the future. School environment, either negatively or positively, impacts the result of this greatly. Uniforms in the learning environment have become a highly debated subject all across the country. Although some individuals believe school uniforms have a positive affect, those people should understand the negatives because uniforms promote appearance over character, lower student’s self-esteem, and conflict with the right of expression.
