Bill Clinton once said, “People will learn to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside, instead of what they’re wearing on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require students to wear school uniforms.” Public schools across America are searching to improve safety, school belonging and also help parents save money & students save time getting ready. One way to improve these issues would be to implement a uniform policy. The adoption of school uniforms policies will reach what public schools across America are searching for. The potential benefits of school uniforms include decreasing violence and threat. Some instances involving designer clothing and expensive shoes have led to life-threating situations among students.
Her study concludes those schools with uniform policies improved in attendance, graduation, and suspension rates (Wilde). Along with all of the academic achievements school uniforms also help diminish school bullying. Bullying is ... ... middle of paper ... ...st solution. Schools want the best for their students, so why not give them the best, and administer school uniforms? Works Cited Kokemuller, Neil.
Uniforms in our Public Schools School Uniforms are a logical choice for the public school venue. Uniforms prevent students from a lower income background to be singled out for poorly made or cheap clothing, prevents use of gang colors, allows for certain safety measures, and allows teachers to form impressions of students based on actions and work rather than dress code choices. Since the 1990 's schools have reported amazing results by mandating a school uniform policy. Konheim-Kalkstein, Y. L (2006) write: “ School uniforms, proponents have said, can lead to improved discipline and classroom behavior, increased school attendance, respect for teachers, better school performance, higher student self-esteem and confidence, lower
When a child knows what is expected of them, as far as dress goes, it helps with distractions in the classroom. Uniforms ecourage modesty and also reduces the need for discipline from teachers because a student is not following dress code. When uniforms are in place, children come to class looking professional which can promote a better learning environment. The last and possibly the most important reason why I believe school uniforms are necessary is for social equality. School uniforms reduce the stress children feel when trying to fit in with their peers.
The reason this topic can be considered so drastically important in today's society is due to the growth and individualism of the student in our school systems. I believe that school uniforms make all students' appearances identical, therefore hindering self expression and personal style. Lebanon Catholic, a private school that I attend, does require uniforms for grades pre-k through twelfth. From personal perceptive speaking for myself, public schools are beginning to become stricter; some schools are beginning to enforce dress codes, while others give their students the freedom to wear what they want. Most people believe that clothes serve as a status symbol that can often be distracting, but also can hinders students' creative personalities.
School uniforms should be required because they reduce peer pressure by not having to wear anything special because others are. School uniforms also help reduce bad behaviors in schools. They do this because if students are all dressed the same other students don’t need to show off to get more attention. School uniforms also help improve student’s grades. They help in prove grades because the student’s concentrate more on academics rather than what they are wearing.
Students should have to wear uniforms to help emphasis from competition on who looks better to better academics, less violence, self-esteem and personal achievements. Many experts insist that uniforms improve learning, make schools safer, and happier students feel happier. (Tarshis, 2011). Wearing uniforms can actually enforce a more professional look to many students. When students arrive to school looking professional, they tend to become more focused on their education.
It would also provide a safer school environment and reduce the cost of school clothes for parents. Having a school uniform policy can help schools provide a better learning environment in the sense that there are fewer distractions for students. One of the major distractions that schools without a uniform policy face is students being distracted by the wardrobe of other students rather than focusing on learning. In a school lacking a uniform policy it is not uncommon to see all different types of offensive and distasteful clothing. In a study conducted by the National Association of Elementary School Principals, sixty- seven percent of principals of schools with a uniform policy in place saw student concentration improve.
Therefore, I believe every school should use uniforms. Though school uniforms may take away from an individual’s creativity when dressing themselves, they will help rule out bullying because of one’s clothing style. School uniforms are cheaper and they can provide unity among school children as well as teachers. School uniforms can stop the battle of what to wear in the morning which will also get children to school on time. School uniforms can help identify visitors or intruders quickly when they enter the school.
