What is the first thing that comes into your mind when you think of cellphones in schools? Is it a slacker in the back of the room texting their friend? Well, it seems like the future for this idea of phones in school involves kids using their phones as clickers, interacting with SMARTboards, etc. Cell phones can be used as a learning tool, as a safety tool to contact parents/officials, and teaches students responsibility. Cell phones should be allowed in schools.
Most people think that phones are primary used for social media or texting. But there are thousands of learning apps on the App Store and Google Play. Some examples of what phones can be used for are; to conduct quick surveys; use internet for research and let students connect with interactive boards, and hundreds of more things. In fact, 73% of Advanced Placement Writing teachers let their students use phones in the classroom to complete assignments. A very strong reason is so kids can contact their parents or officials during school. This trend became more popular after the 9/11 terrorist attack. If phones were allowed in schools, kids could text their parents if they needed something, or to tell them they’re safe. Classroom phones could be used for calling parents, but what would happen if that phone was in clear view of the hallway with an armed intruder? Also, many students have appointments during the school day, and they might need to call their parent to take them there, in case the parent forgot, or the student doesn’t know what time it is, and would need to ask their parents.
