Mulan, a Disney movie, when first released was looked at as a great film. As time has passed,negative views have grown against the movie.Some individuals claim Mulan is sexist. This paper will travel back in time , to see if the movie fits the time era that it was to be portraying. Then the information from this movie will be compared as well as contrasted to the past. So that it can be concluded on or not this film is or isn’t sexist. The story of Mulan is set in the Han Dynasty.The Han Dynasty was a inventive time, it is referred as one of the greater Chinese dynasties. In this dynasty is where the invention of paper took place; some years later the Emperor turned it into an industry. In this “rulebook” Ban Zhao defines the role of a woman, dictates customs, and traditions for women. It states how a woman should should put every male of her family before herself. Ban Zhao’s book, isn’t just for women. It also has rules about how to raise a girl.One example “On the third day after the birth of a girl the ancients observed three customs: first to place the baby below the bed; second to give her a potsherd [a piece of broken pottery] with which to play; and third to announce her birth to her ancestors by an offering. To give her potsherds with which to play indubitably signified that she should practice labor and consider it her primary duty to be industrious. To announce her birth before her ancestors clearly meant that she ought to esteem as her primary duty the continuation of the observance of worship in the home”. In the movie Mulan ,it shows that women are not held at the same level as men, and that women are only fit for breeding.
