Common Causes of Severe Abdominal Cramps
Does your stomach hurt a lot? Chronic lower belly pain is so common these days, many people think it’s normal. It’s only when the abdominal cramps become severe that they begin to worry it could be something serious.
If you're experiencing severe abdominal cramps, here are some of the common conditions that may be causing it:
1. Constipation
Constipation is a number one cause of chronic lower belly pain, especially in women. If you’re not having at least one bowel movement per day, you’re constipated.
Constipation is often caused by a combination of poor diet, lack of exercise, and stress.
If constipation is giving you severe abdominal cramps, try treating it naturally by adding more fiber-rich

Chronic yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis are common causes of cervical inflammation.
Women with cervical pain often find sexual intercourse painful and may feel period-like cramps in between their menstrual cycles.
Since cervicitis can also be caused by sexually transmitted disease, it’s important for women with these symptoms to visit their gynecologist for accurate diagnosis.
3. Ulcerative Colitis
This inflammatory bowel disease is a common cause of severe abdominal cramps. In people with this gastrointestinal condition, the immune system overreacts and attacks the lower intestine, resulting in chronic inflammation.
Oftentimes, this reaction is caused by undiagnosed gluten intolerance.
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. People with an intolerance to this protein often experience severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea, muscle aches, chronic fatigue, flatulence, brain fog, and emotional instability.
To determine if food allergies are causing your lower belly pain, try an elimination diet for six weeks.
An elimination diet removes the most common offenders, including gluten, lactose, citrus fruits, nuts, eggs, fish, shellfish, food dyes, MSG, and

After the six-week period is over, add a different allergen food each day to test for a reaction.
When you find the culprit food(s), you’ll know.
4. Crohn’s Disease
This form of inflammatory bowel disease commonly affects the lower intestines but, unlike ulcerative colitis, it can also affect other parts of the digestive system such as the mouth and anus.
Smoking, Jewish heritage, and environmental allergies can make Crohn’s disease symptoms worse. Adding probiotics, digestive enzymes, and bulk fiber can ease the symptoms.
It is also important for anybody living with chronic gastrointestinal discomfort to cut junk out of their diets. Fast food only worsens inflammation and intestinal upset.
5. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
If you have severe abdominal pain along with frequently loose bowel movements, you might have a common condition known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Unlike other inflammatory bowel diseases, irritable bowel syndrome can be triggered by emotions. Furthermore, many people with irritable bowel syndrome find their symptoms worsen during periods of emotional
(What is....2016). The first documented case of Crohn’s disease suspected was King Alfred in 850 A.D. This disease is named after a Jewish man named Dr. Burrill Bernard Crohn (1884-1983) who became interested in the condition as his father, also a Dr, suffered from a disorder of the bowel. He devoted his career to “regional enteritis” the disease that now bares his name. It is necessary to understand the disease to be able to provide care for people who are afflicted by it (de Campos and Kotze 2013). Especially since Crohn’s is a chronic disease or a lifelong affliction it’s important to understand etiology, it’s symptoms, treatments, and to maintain the disease and the psychological well being of the patient managed (Crohn’s...2015).
Researchers think that this immune system response may be triggered by bacteria or viruses, material in the intestinal contents, or a defective signal from the body’s own cells, called an autoimmune response. Inflammation results in pain, heat, redness, and swelling of the tissue. Chronic inflammation can harm the function of tissues and organs (U.S. News, 2009). Crohn’s disease also appears to affect certain ethnic groups more than others. American Jews of European descent are four to five times more likely to de... ...
Hemorrhoids are just a swelling of the veins in and around your rectal and anal canal. In their normal state, these veins are designed to help stool pass out of your body, comfortably. When they become inflamed, however, any ordinary bathroom routine can be very painful. For many people, these symptoms are experienced throughout the day. They complain of an uncomfortable, itchy and even painful feeling near the anus. What many people don't realize is that can develop hemorrhoids either internally or externally. An internal hemorrhoid is one that you cannot see and is in your anal canal. These are often unnoticed by sufferers unless they notice some blood when they have a bowl movement.
Explain your reasoning for each. The primary diagnosis is ovarian torsion. The patient present with classical signs and symptoms of RLQ abdominal pain the worsen with any movement, nausea, tachycardia, RLQ tenderness, guarding, and rebound on examination as well as right adnexal tenderness and right adnexal mass (I-Human Patients, 2017). Differential diagnosis include; pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), appendicitis, and renal colic. Clinical features that favor the diagnosis of PID are non-migratory pain, bilateral pelvic tenderness and absence of nausea or vomiting. Appendicitis typically presents with poorly localized colicky central abdominal pain associated with anorexia and vomiting. Renal colic typically presents with sudden onset of severe unilateral colicky pain radiating from the loin to the groin, which comes in waves, very similar to torsion (Krishnan, Kaur, Bali, & Rao,
The sciatic nerve is like a rope made up of several nerve roots stemming from the lower back and sacral area combining to make a nerve matrix as large as your thumb. This is susceptible to nerve compression. Since this nerve runs down the back of the thigh and lower leg it also causes leg pain. The pain can result from sitting in one position too long such as with secretaries or long haul truck drivers. Women who wear very high heels suffer from sciatic pain as well. Another well known cause of sciatic pain is a slipped or...
Gonorrhea in women can cause vaginal discharges that are bloody or yellow, painful urination, bleeding between periods, excessive bleeding during menstrual periods, painful intercourse, and lower abdominal pain. Symptoms of rectal infection include discharge, anal itching, and occasional painful bowel movements with fresh blood in the feces. When treated early, there are no long-term consequences of gonorrhea. Doctors usually prescribe a combination of antibiotics, such as ceftriaxone, doxycycline, or azithromycin, which will treat both diseases. Serious complications can occur, however, when left untreated.
The popularity of a gluten-free diet has risen in recent years due to several factors and misconceptions. A decade ago, gluten allergies were thought to be rare outside of Europe. Now, however, the number of Americans living with an entirely gluten-free lifestyle continues its exponential growth. The statistics of those adopting the diet show a vast combination of people, ranging from those with severe Celiac Disease to those with a desire to lose weight (Sapone). The factors and misconceptions include: the growing number of people with gluten allergies, the idea that gluten is harmful and has no nutritional value, and the idea that a gluten-free diet generates weight loss.
Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are both in a category of diseases called Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. This is a classification of disease in which inflammation forms in a part of the digestive tract, known as the gastrointestinal tract or GI tract, of the patient. The immune system then treats this area of inflammation as a foreign pathogen and attacks it. The causes of both of these diseases are currently unknown to the medical world.

Symptoms may vary depending on the person or on the stage of appendicitis. The most common symptoms are dull, sharp, cramp like pain in the lower right abdomen, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, swelling, high fever, inability to pass gas, constipation and/or diarrhea.
Symptomology:.. Simple musculoskeletal back pain is a symptom of pain in the lumbrasacral area of the back (Jackson & Simpson, 2006). Upper thighs and knees are also known to be affected (Jackson & Simpson, 2006). This pain is usually described as dull pain (Jackson & Simpson, 2006). Spinal nerve root pain is localised down the leg, and usually continues below the knee and into the feet (Jackson & Simpson, 2006).
There are several reasons that could be causing TJ epigastric pain. According to Kerkar (2016), epigastric pain usually occur immediately after eating a meal or when lying down after food consumption. It can be associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) which causes pain and inflammation as a result of food content backing up towards the esophagus from the stomach. Other medical conditions associated with epigastric pain include gastritis, pancreatitis, peptic ulcer disease (PUD), hiatal hernia, liver function, duodenal ulcers, gallstones, gastroenteritis, or carcinoma of the stomach. In rare cases, epigastric pain may be caused by cardiac abnormality (Kerkar, 2016).
Food is the most common trigger, be it a food allergy or a food intolerance. “A wide range of foods has been implicated — chocolate, spices, fats, fruits, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, milk, carbonated beverages and alcohol to name a few.” Stress can also be a factor. When an individuals is under a high amount of stress their sympathetic nervous system may result in not fully absorbing foods once they have been digested. Majority of IBS is seen in females, indicating that hormonal changes may effect food digestion. Lastly any bacteria in the intestines will certainly trigger Irritable Bowel Syndrome. While majority of individuals have experienced some form of acute gastrointestinal problems those who truly have IBS are typically under
Bacterial bladder infections may occur in women as a result of sexual intercourse. But even sexually inactive girls and women are susceptible to lower urinary tracts infections because the female genital area often harbors bacteria that can cause cystitis.
