DSU students to participate in Belize service-learning trip
When you mention spring break, you may think of droves of college students heading south for sun, fun and adventure. For 15 Dakota State University students, that is exactly what they intend to do, however it’s not exactly what one might consider. The next generation of DSU elementary teachers will take their classroom learning to Belize for a service-learning trip of a lifetime.
The DSU College of Education students and faculty will spend two weeks at Victorious Nazarene Primary School in San Jose Succotz, Belize. The DSU class, known as EDFN 492: Study Abroad: Service-Learning in Belize, will focus their efforts on the Pre-K through 8th students at the elementary school. During the service-learning trip, the DSU students and faculty will focus on not only classroom learning, but also hands-on service projects. This year, one of their goals is to implement a small library in each classroom and expand a larger elementary library with donated, gently-used books. They hope to have the books and bookcases in the classrooms by the time they leave.

The DSU students and faculty are making the trek in two shifts. The first five elementary education students, who are currently in their student teaching semester, and DSU Adjunct Professor, Sue Filler, leave a week before spring break starts in February 2016. The remaining students and faculty, including Crystal Pauli and Vicki Sterling, will fly to Belize the following
Most students look forward to fall and spring break. It’s a time of rest and relaxation and perhaps for a few, a chance to get ahead on assignments. These breaks are often something that I personally look forward too, furthermore assuming that this is the same for other students as well.
Caring for the elderly is an activity that requires patience, willingness, due diligence and effective co-ordination of resources in order to optimally benefit the recipients. Community services and programs is one such avenue that caters for the elderly by providing for their mental, physical, social and emotional well-being, and by extension promotes a greater quality of life. Community services help meet the needs of the elderly and attract older people who face barriers to active living. One strong advocate of community based services and a program for the elderly is the American Association of Retired People (AARP) who relentlessly seeks to promote a healthy lifestyle for people 50 years and over.
...rch is the arrival of a beautiful season, spring. But March is also the disappearance of cold and dark winter. The Winter Break has ended and students continued on working until March Break, and right after the March Break school starts to become more serious and important. But before all that why do we only get a week of March Break, we’re tired of school and we want to really relax before we head for the difficult part of school. We should at least deserve two weeks of March Break just like the Winter Break, and the March Break is the last Break for the school year. The one week of March Break narrows us to limited activities, which is not enjoyable. The tiredness can cause lack of performance in school and the one week of March Break is not going to help, but two weeks of March Break can calm down the students and prepare them for three more months of school.
In the past, I have partaken in several service hours dedicated to caring for kittens in the Anderson Animal Shelter, and I have also helped the librarians at the St. Charles Public Library as part of their teen volunteer program. With these two experiences, I have gained the patience needed to help peers, such as the previously mentioned situational Freshman, who are lost in their endeavours.
Principals and teachers have reported that “Reading Partners” has helped increase students’ reading levels. During my time at the program, I accumulated twelve volunteer hours. When I found out that I had to do seven hours of volunteer work, I immediately knew that I wanted it to involve children. I attended the volunteer fair that was held earlier in the semester and signed up for programs such as Louie’s Kids and Wings for Kids. Unfortunately, I could not volunteer for either of these programs because they were not within walking distance of the college and I did not have transportation.
They also look to see how active in the community they are. Summer break gives students a chance to get involved or lend a hand. Agricultural students may attend the county fairs. Students interested in forien languages may be interested in visit other contries to learn about their culture. Summer camps might not seem very educational but they really are. They give you a chance to boost your teamwork, leadership or problem solving
On June 6, 2017 I left for my trip to the Dominican Republic off on a 10 week journey. I worked within a school teaching 4 year olds in the morning and worked alongside first grade through fourth grade students who have either learning disabilities or are new to the school. The school is a multilingual school teaching both English and Spanish along with basic studies.
On the first day of class, the professor would present a very generic service trip-- maybe the class could pick which one to tackle from a list. It would possess characteristics that are not helpful to the community and do not represent an understanding of their culture, things like teaching English or “helping” build things. This would serve as our rough draft.
As a University of North Carolina student, the Carolina community will learn from me why it is important to serve. My definition of the word “SERVE” is to Support, Encourage, Reach, Value and Evolve. For the last three years during spring break, I have served the Tolupan Indian tribe in the Honduran mountains. As part of this experience, I have supported the Tolupon by sharing the love of Christ and providing necessary supplies, food and medical services. To encourage members of the village, I took school supplies, toys and clothing to the Tolupon children. Seeing the smiles on the faces of the men and women and to hear the children laugh as they receive toys and clothes has been rewarding and helps me realize I have made a difference in their lives.
For me, volunteering for the Peace Corps is an incredible opportunity to assist underprivileged communities while creating positive change in peoples’ lives. An opportunity that defines what it means to be a student at Mercer University. At Mercer University, we are enshrined with the idea of services, services to our community, services to our state and services to people living halfway around the world that truly needs our aid. This selfless service to others is an ideal model of what it means to Mercer Bear and it’s something I believe that could help me during my Peace Corps services. During my time at Mercer University, I had the wonderful opportunity of tutoring students at Rutland High School, which is one of Macon’s Title One Schools
From elementary to high school, kids from all grade levels get excited over spring break. This well deserved week of vacation is important because it gives us students time to relax before the end of course exams.
I officially began my career as a student teacher in Spanish on August 25, 2014 at Memorial High School in Smallville, Ohio. I work under the guidance of Mrs. Santer, my mentor teacher, who has been introducing WMHS students to the wonderful world of languages for over 30 years. This year Mrs. Santer is teaching various levels of Spanish (Advanced Placement, IV, III, and I) as well as French I.
Such as tests are happening, exams and near and but by the end of the year around summer the report cards are done and students are in the classes doing activities and watching movies. Even if when it’s so close to the end of the year teachers don’t have any major work for the students because they can’t mark-so that wouldn’t make sense knowing it doesn’t even count. Around winter students are missing school days (absents) the teachers have to post pone the test for that one kid who missed it. They will most likely have to do it the next day. With all the grade eights missing a whole week is very traumatic. Experiencing the trip in summer won't make teachers worried and won't make students miss the test so it’s like a win-win. If you will, please keep on reading for my last
People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
Thousands of homeless animals are looking for forever homes in America. Volunteering is a great way to give to your community and socialize the animals at the shelters. Working with dogs and cats that have not had good starts in their lives helps them trust again. It helps animals get over the trauma they have had before they went to the shelter. Socializing makes the animal more adoptable and they are given a chance to get forever homes. Volunteer at your local humane society 's and help out the animals like I have worked with in shelters.
