For me, volunteering for the Peace Corps is an incredible opportunity to assist underprivileged communities while creating positive change in peoples’ lives. An opportunity that defines what it means to be a student at Mercer University. At Mercer University, we are enshrined with the idea of services, services to our community, services to our state and services to people living halfway around the world that truly needs our aid. This selfless service to others is an ideal model of what it means to Mercer Bear and it’s something I believe that could help me during my Peace Corps services. ...Bridgewater State University was a complete success. For some that she presented in front of, it could have been the first time that they have ever heard of her community center in Tanzania or the first time they have ever heard of Tanzania. Relating to her overall purpose of being at the university, her message was received well by many. As she said, she wanted to make people more aware that volunteer work can help inspire people to make a difference in their communities. She has successfully presented a case were two people exiled from a country; in which they were brought up, and moved to a country that is 180°different having success in creating a stronger community and were able to have that community become worldly known: with the lack of technology. This is a remarkable and evident accomplishment of the organizational structure utilized for social services.
I aspire to achieve many things during my time in the Peace Corps. I hope that I can make a lasting impact on my community and those around me. I hope to help the people of Botswana see what a citizen of the United States is really like in a positive light. I chose to do my service learning project at Feed My Starving Children. I chose this service learning project because I had prior knowledge and experience by doing it with my family and church. Feed My Starving Children has been a huge impact to those who have participated in this service experience because their mission is to pack meals that go to very hungry children around the world. Being from a single parent family, it is hard for us to not be concerned about where the money for food is coming from, yet we have food on our tables for everyday meals. Therefore, I can’t imagine what it is like for those who experience hunger.
Volunteering can be gratifying and everyone should experience giving time to others without expecting anything in return. I have some history with The Excel Center in Kokomo, I am a recent graduate from there and have spent time tutoring when I can, to help other students succeed. After leaving there, I considered a future career within the walls of the school, I have even been told on numerous occasions that I am more than welcomed back after I finish my degree. Once I knew I had to volunteer in a human service field, I knew I wanted to give The Excel Center a shot right away, knowing this was a guaranteed place to be challenged and given an honest opinion of my work.

The Peace Corps has accomplished its goal to change perceptions of Americans by people of other cultures. In the Peace Corps study, “The Impact of Peace Corps Service on Host Communities and Host Country Perceptions of Americans”, 30 percent of respondents perceived Americans as arrogant, self-centered, or selfish prior to interaction with a volunteer (Kerley & Jenkins, 2010). Before communication with a Peace Corps volunteer, one respondent with an uneven work-life balance reported thinking that “[people from the United States] were workaholics who don’t pay attention to other people and don’t know how to have fun or entertain themselves” (Kerley & Jenkins, 2010). “While most individuals reported a positive or neutral opinion of American prior to interacting with Volunteers, most (73%) still reported having an even more positive opinion after the interaction” (Kerley & Jenkins, 2010). Through the development of the Peace Corps the grotesque stereotype of the typical American has been eradicated in countries where the Peace Corps serves.
I went out to collect cans for the food shelter, I helped out at the bowling special olympics, and in December I volunteered to help set up a 5k races Autism, and the thing I took out of my volunteering experiences so far is that everyone has a story and to take the time to listen to others and connect with the world around you. In my experiences you can learn more serving people for an hour than you can learn in a week of classes. My only regret in my freshman year of college is that I didn’t figure out this sooner than I did.
I learned about the importance of giving back at the age of 11yr old and putting the very important needs of others in front of my own. Volunteering in a homeless shelter at a young age opened my eyes. Where I was placed to give food, clothes, money & hygiene products to people in need. Where would I be right now without the help of God, my mother, family& friends and the church community”. Giving a helping hand to the people in the community is Something we should always do. When I began this class, I had never had any experience or knowledge on non-profit organizations. After reading the chapters and doing the project for CHASI, I began to realize that non-profit could be my niche. I chose to pursue a degree in criminal justice, because of the many job possibilities, but I never would have imagined non-profit being one of those possible careers for myself. I was raised under the philosophy from both sides of my family, that if you give, you will get in return, I believe this so much and I have witnessed it personally throughout this semester. I have given my time and effort to raise money for people, who I don’t know and who are less fortunate than some, and although I may not receive money or items back in exchange, I get to feel a sense of pride, which is more than enough. So when I went to the nonprofit career website and looked through the job listing, there were many that I was interested in but only a couple that I could actually see myself doing.
Taking time to volunteer at the many nonprofit organizations, homeless shelters, advocacy centers, philanthropic fundraisers, local schools and child care facilities in the inner city is not always at the forefront of young people’s minds while navigating through their college experiences. But, with a little push from student organizations, local nonprofits and passionate individuals, volunteerism and community change can start to take a front seat and become not just an opportunity, but also a priority in the lives of young people.
I think this entire experience has been amazing and everyone should volunteer at least once in their life. It might even change their major! I had already planned on working with my community, specifically in the behavioral/mental health area, so this experience just opened my eyes to how much of a difference I can make by such simple gestures. This class was a way for me to get out of my comfort zone and now I will continue to volunteering even after this class ends. In the last few years, however, more attention has been given to prosocial behaviors that continue for an extended time—sustained prosocial actions. There are a number of different kinds of behaviors that might be classified as sustained prosocial actions (e.g., caring for the elderly in a nursing home, the donation of blood at a blood center), but this study is primarily concerned with volunteerism.
Volunteering impacted my life by building my self-confidence, relationship skills, and social skills. Helping others and devoting my time to this organization supplied me with a sense of pride. I now know that I have the ability to accomplish a wide spectrum of tasks. Volunteering gave me a positive outlook on life. While doing so, I met numerous people whether they were patients, coworkers, or other volunteers. I learned how to share similar interests with others which created friendships. As relationships began forming, I felt an enormous amount of support. I ceased to be timid; my interaction with others strengthened.
