Year round education seems like a very scary concept for most students, and some parents. But supporter of eight years of year round schooling, Barbara Reichenbach says, “What the school districts really need to do is find a new title for year round school because most people don’t understand the concept. The children are not going to school the entire year, they have vacations, the title ‘year-round’ is misleading”. The students do not actually go to school more days, or year round. The days of actual school days are are the same amount as when a long summer break is implemented.
Homework-Free Weekends: A Brief Break for Students High School students are very busy during the school week with their academic classes, extracurricular activities, and responsibilities at home. The weekend is a time for students to take a break from school and spend time doing other activities. Most teachers assign homework over the weekend, which doesn’t allow much time for these activities. Markesan High School students are especially busy during the week. The weekend is their only time to take a break from their busy schedules and take time for personal activities.
Well, taking a gap year after high school is basically taking a year off, as a break between high school and college. Different people have different opinions whether a student should take a gap year or shouldn’t take a gap year. A discussion on this topic is really important because all the students and parents are confused whether it would be worth it to take a gap year or it would just be a waste of time and money. The different opinions vary from person to person. According to a few people GAP year is worth it because students become mature, it is kind of a break from studies, grow different kind of interests, do some volunteering work while at the same time some people think its just waste of a year, student lose out on the academics, they lose their interest and difficultly in joining back the academics after an year off.
Another was the disruption of summer camps, and the student employment, in which the traditional school calendar does not interfere. In the now traditional school calendar children receive a three-month vacation from school, which results in most cases that children forget plenty of information they had learned the past year. So when they arrive back to school, teachers tend to spend up to three or four weeks reviewing and consequently lose time to learn something new. The National Association for Year-Round Education made a research that proved that students with low income made simil... ... middle of paper ... ...f three months to rest from school, this is not good for students who most of the time forget a large quantity of information they learned the past year and return to school to review what they have already seen. For this reason, the year-round education calendar is a better option for schools and for students as well.
Under the agrarian system, most United States students are in school for nine to ten months, and get a two- to three- month summer vacation. However, the United States is no longer an agricultural-based society, and students have no need to take a three-month-long, unnecessary, not to mention disruptive break during the summer months; instead, the United States should switch the school systems to a year-round calendar. The phrase “year-round” scares students and parents alike. Some argue that students attending school year-round will get so burnt out that the new schedule would be counterproductive. However, the term “year-round” is misleading.
Most high school graduates have only one thing on their mind: college. Those graduates spend so much time applying to colleges and wondering what they actually want to do with their life. Most of the United States graduates feel like they should wait a year before attending college. This is considered a “gap year.” “Increasingly, school leavers are taking time out from study or formal work after completing high school-- often referred to as a ‘gap year’ (involving structured activities such as "volunteer tourism" and unstructured activities such as leisure)”(Martin). “Many students pursue volunteering during their gap time, and hundreds of organizations offer the chance to be of service domestically and abroad” (Sarouhan).
Children at this age need no more than a half hour of play time during school, otherwise they will tire themselves to the point of fatigue. This will not only help the kids catch a break, but the adults as well. Some teachers require a breath of fresh air when teaching screaming, immature, and boisterous kids. The best way to add this thirty minutes of free time is to split it into two fifteen minute recesses. This way the kids can look forward to the beginning and end of the school day.
The benefits of year round schools For years, parents and educators have debated the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional school calendar, which has long summer vacations for all students. The longer you are away from school, the more you lose what you learned in the previous year. Studies have shown that children who know English as a second language benefit the most from year-round education because during the long summer break, they may not hear English for several months. Long summer breaks is a problem for traditional schools and the solution is to substitute traditional schools for year-round schools. First, Long summer breaks is a problem for traditional schools. Kathleen Kingsbury reveals that “Parents also worry their children won’t have the time – or the energy – for after-school activities.” (3). Shortening the school week will not only add at least one hour to the typical school day, but also shorten breaks, and elective times, because of the
