Spirituality has often been defined as the search for a connection to something bigger than ourselves and this search often comes from a desire to discover a meaning for life. A person’s spirituality can be understood by how they find and receive strength, peace, and security. When a person is faced with a physical illness, these aspects of a person’s character and spirituality are put to test and often utilized to bring them a sense of hope and purpose.
Therefore, as a nurse it is to important to have an understanding of spirituality and also a connection to one’s own spiritual identity because only then will the nurse be able to truly relate to each of their patients on every level of care they may require.

She says she can get security from not placing herself in dangerous or life threatening situations and surrounding herself with people whom she trusts will watch out for her. She believes she has received security from her parents who provided her with everything she needed to feel safe and secure growing up; a home, food, clothes, and most of all, unconditional love and support. In addition, her friends have provided her with a sense of security during her transition to college by being there for her and letting her know she is never alone. Katie says the only way she would be able to get more security is to turn to God because she already has received a lot of physical security from friends and family and in order to receive spiritual security, she must look to God.
My spirituality impacts my health because it affects how I view difficult situations I may face due to my health and how I find the strength to endure through these times is greatly affected by my spirituality. If I had little awareness of my own spirituality, it would be more difficult for me to be knowledgeable of my patient’s spiritual needs and it may never even cross my mind as an important topic to address. Reaching out to my patients in order to better understand their spiritual needs will hopefully add a sense of trust and provide for a deeper relationship between my patients. Developing that close, trusting relationship will help the patient feel comfortable sharing their fears and doubts with me and I can have more of an understanding of how I can be there for them in each moment. Having an understanding of my own spirituality will yield a better experience for my patients and if I remain culturally competent and aware that everyone has a unique spirituality, I will be able to relate to all my patients on a in trusting relationship.
Overall, spirituality is a very important part of providing health care for patients because it can help nurses provide for their patients on a deeper, more intimate level. This intentional care for a patient’s spirituality will hopefully give the patient a more positive and healthy outlook on their situation.
