Like the Disciples of Christ, nurses have been blessed with specialized powers that has been passed down through generations has gifts. The book of Matthew speaks of this transition from Jesus Christ to his Disciples. (10 Matthew 1 King James Version) And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirit, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. Even student nurses are blessed with these wonderful gifts. These gifts are further explained in the book of Corinthians. It is emphasized in the bible that we were all not given the same gifts, for Christ had a plan. Many of us may not have come from religious family, or may come from other religious backgrounds beside Christianity. That should not make a difference because even though spirituality comes from religion, you do not have to be a religious person to give spiritual care to your patients. To believe in something spiritual is to believe in something profound that it is out of this world, and cannot be explain like a miracle. When all medical efforts fail, patients, who are religious or not tend to look for divine intervention. Mauk, K.l., & Schmidt, N.K. (2004) best describes this by pointing out “ these factors are strongly apparent in times of personal crises involving serious illness and diseases because they threaten a person’s earthly existence” (p.66) The patients is now in need of spiritual care and it is or job to deliver this care , but how do we deliver this …show more content…

To have faith is to give hope. White (2011) “Hope takes the place of despair and joy of oppressive gloom” (p.42). When you show the patient that you have giving the best care that you can, you give them hope that whatever it is that you are doing is going to work. They start to believe in you, and believe in their faith; sometimes even referring to you has and angel sent down from heaven to help them through this terrible time that they are going through. In many of the stories that talk about Christ healing, reference were made to that fact that it was faith and belief that healed and not the actual touch that created the miracle. White (2011) “Marvelous will be the transformation wrought in him who by faith opens the door of the heart to the savoir” (p.51). We must always have to have a positive attitude. Having a positive attitude shows compassion, to show compassion you have to be attentive, and use your active listening skills to truly understand what your patient needs are to empathize with what they are going through. When you show empathy they can tell that you care about their well-being and that it goes beyond the job and a paycheck. Then you have to go much further by constantly reassuring your patients and encouraging them to be strong even when they are weak. There are many things through this process that you may not always understand but we must always keep an open mind. Spiritual care
