Learning in a Sexist and Antireligion Setting School dress codes not only limit students freedom of expression but condemns girl’s bodies as well as ‘’feminine’’ tendencies on boys. A school dress code is a series of rules that school boards create intending to restraint the way students dress. This policy was originally created to make schools a safe learning environment; however, this policy has caused many complications in schools around the world because student’s rights are being taken away. From sexism to religion intolerance, these codes have been doing more damage than good. School dress codes make boys think that they should not have their hair long because it would be too girly for them and young girls feel they are doing something wrong by showing their skin when they are wearing shorts and tank tops. Students with different religious backgrounds have also been victimized by this code. Many religions require its followers to dress in a certain way, which is very difficult for many students to do because in most cases their school dress policy does not allow them to do so. Making girls cover their legs when they are not wearing ‘’appropriate’’ clothing, forcing boys to dress according to their gender stereotype, and not allowing religious students dress as states by their religion standards makes of school a place where you must change your personality in order to receive education. In order for schools to become a place where students are allowed to freely express themselves and don’t feel ashamed of their bodies and beliefs, school boards must change their dress code. Sexism or gender discrimination is prejudice or discrimination based on a person’s sex or gender. It can affect any gender; however... ... middle of paper ... ...on intolerance are not an easy thing to eradicate. However, there are several ways in which we as scholars and a community can participate in order to completely remove them from school dress codes. I believe that doing protests and campaigns, as well as creating awareness about this issue in our community are the most effective ways to put an end to this problem. If our voices were to be heard, it would be a big change for a large number of students around the world. Implementing regulations to school dress codes that give students permission to express themselves more effectively would make them feel more comfortable with showing their real identity and as a result, they would improve their school performance. The purpose of schools is not only to give us the knowledge that we need to get a career or job, but to help us become the persons we want to be. Ourselves.
